Re: Latest Bama News 12/7/12

[QUOTESo will Jones succeed at Tennessee? No one can say for sure, obviously. All hires are gambles. But his resume isn’t a bad one. Comparing him to the man above him on UT’s list, Strong, Jones’s resume is pretty good. Strong was 1-2 head-to-head in three meetings with Jones. Strong’s career mark is 24-15 in three years at Louisville plus a game as interim coach at Florida. Jones’ career record is 50-27 in three seasons at Central Michigan and in three seasons at Cincinnati. Strong has ties to the SEC in recruiting, but Jones has won or shared four conference titles in six seasons as a head coach. CBSSports.com also named Jones the Big East Coach of the Year this year ahead of Strong, for whatever that’s worth. Jones has a more established head coaching record than Malzahn at Auburn. He has more experience than first-time head coach Mark Stoops at Kentucky. Hart said he wanted someone with head coaching experience. While that’s no guarantee of success, Jones has more experience than two of the other three new SEC coaches hired and more than Strong.Ultimately, in a state that produces few NFL-caliber players, Jones will sink or swim on the recruiting trail. The immediate worry for Vol fans? He has no ties to the South and will have to put down ties. But we said the same thing about Arkansas’ new hire, Bret Bielema. It was a bit surprising to us to find that Rivals had ranked Bielema’s last two complete classes at Wisconsin pretty evenly with Jones’ last two singing classes at UC. In 2011, Wisconsin’s class was #40 while Cincinnati’s was #49. Last February, the Bearcats actually had the #50 ranked class while the Badgers came in at #56.[/QUOTE]

Re: Latest Bama News 12/7/12

As college football moves towards a four team playoff in 2014, I believe it is the best interest of the Southeastern Conference to move away from a conference championship game. Assuming the college football playoff takes the four best teams, it would absolutely benefit the SEC to dissolve its conference championship game in order to have more teams represented in the playoff system. Though this is radical thinking, the idea is not that farfetched if winning on a national scale is the goal of the SEC. I know that the SEC Championship game is the best conference championship played. There is no place more electric than the Georgia Dome when the champion from the West plays its Eastern counterpart. We have gotten unforgettable matchups and games like Florida-Alabama in 1992 and 1994, Tennessee-Auburn in 1997, and Alabama-Georgia this year. No other championship game carries more hype, larger crowds, and higher ticket demand and prices than the SEC Football Championship. But if the SEC wants to give itself a better chance for its programs to win a national championship it will need to have as many teams represented as possible. This can only happen with the conference discontinuing its most popular game.

Every now and then a player comes along who makes us step back and truly appreciate the career they have had. Sometimes that reflection comes several years down the road. In the case of Barrett Jones, we can appreciate all he has accomplished already, even with a game against Notre Dame for the national championship still to come.Alabama football has a long tradition of great players who have passed through Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide boast over 100 All-Americans and counting, with numerous individual award winners including 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. But no player in Alabama history has had his name etched in more hardware than Barrett Jones, and the accolades continue to pour in for the Crimson Tide’s four-year starter. Jones came to Alabama as a part of an incredible 2008 recruiting class that featured the likes of Mark Barron, Terrence Cody, Marcell Dareus, Dont’a Hightower, Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Robert Lester and Courtney Upshaw. Jones was a four-star recruit from Germantown, Tennessee, but he was far from the crown jewel of that recruiting class; or so we thought at the time. Nobody could have predicted the success he would have. He was simply another good player that everyone hoped would start on the offensive line for a couple years.

Don’t ask Nick Saban about schedule strength; not if you value your life. For the best coach in college football, it’s always been about his team, not theirs; about playing to a standard, not a style. Saban never thinks about external factors – he won’t even field questions about such things. Instead, he chews on glass and glares at you and makes you cry, because you should know better than to ask. You should know that for Saban and his dynasty-in-the-making Crimson Tide, it’s not about who you play. It’s about how you play. Who can argue with the results?

Re: Latest Bama News 12/7/12

A few people wondered why Georgia, after the BCS was no longer a possibility, would prefer to get in the Capital One Bowl, rather than the Cotton. A trip to Dallas, the first in nearly 30 years, to play a Big 12 team seemed a better consolation prize than another Florida bowl against a Big Ten team. But there's one result of Georgia going to the Capital One: Mark Richt, Todd Grantham and assistant coaches make a little more money. Richt gets $100,000 for making the Capital One Bowl, then it goes down to $75,000 for making the Outback, Cotton or Chick-fil-A. (And it goes down to $50,000 for the Music, Liberty or Independence.)

For Georgia coaches, Capital One pays out-macon.com

Re: Latest Bama News 12/7/12

Former Alabama and New York Jets legend Joe Namath says he would go with Mark Sanchez over Greg McElroy for Sunday's game at Jacksonville. McElroy replaced Sanchez in the previous game and led the Jets to a 7-6 win over Arizona. "We've all had ugly games," Namath said this morning on the Colin Cowherd ESPN radio show. However, Namath added that he would let Sanchez "play his way out of the position." He still is not a huge believer in Sanchez and but is a big fan of McElroy's.

Greg McElroyPosition: Quarterback
College: Alabama
Hometown: Southlake, Tex.
NFL Team: New York Jets
Here's the scoop: The Jets signed Tim Tebow in the off-season as backup to Mark Sanchez, a move that caused ripples in the NFL and a downright obsession for ESPN. But when it came time to bench Sanchez last week, the Jets went with a quarterback who was also Alabama's second choice after it failed to recruit Tebow.
