For every Charlie Strong, who was able to prove his worth at Louisville, there is a Jon Embree fired too soon, David Steele writes. It's why hiring black coaches in college football is getting better yet still staying the same.
With the 2012 college football regular season in the books, it’s time to take a look at the year in review. Several freshmen made an impact in the national and conference title races, including Heisman winner Johnny Manziel. The redshirt freshman wasn’t the only quarterback making a splash in their first season, as Oregon’s Marcus Mariota and UCLA’s Brett Hundley each averaged over 250 yards of total offense. Outside of the quarterbacks, TCU defensive end Devonte Fields and Georgia running back Todd Gurley were other impact freshmen.

With conference championships finished, colleges turned their focus to recruiting, and a busy weekend was the result. Ricky Seals-Jones, the top prospect in Texas and No. 13 player in the nation, announced his commitment to Texas A&M on Monday. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound receiver, who projects as an athlete because of his ability to play multiple positions, announced his commitment to the Aggies before family, friends, coaches, teammates and classmates in a special ceremony at Sealy High School.
Schad says Lattimore has the blessing of Gamecock coach Steve Spurrier. Lattimore has already battled back from one knee injury and his current rehab could cost him all of next season. Still, the talented workhorse back reportedly plans to meet with NFL officials at the scouting combine and then jog and catch passes for them by the end of March. Remarkably — at least for anyone who saw Lattimore’s leg bend in the wrong direction in Carolina’s win over Tennessee last fall — Lattimore is already off crutches. If/when he announces this decision, he’ll leave Columbia with 2,677 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns to his name.
LSU and Clemson have known for a week that they will be playing each other in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year’s Eve in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Tigers from the Atlantic Coast Conference could have used that time to track the evolution of the Tigers from the Southeastern Conference. They would have seen a group that arrived on campus in the summer as the No. 1 team in the USA Today/Coaches preseason poll. They would have splattered ink all over the preseason depth chart as they accounted for a variety of changes because of disciplinary action, academic deficiencies and health and personal issues.
