Cook, rated the No. 9 prospect in Alabama and the No. 15 cornerback in the nation by 247Sports, originally committed to Nebraska this summer. However, he had been hoping for an offer from Auburn or Alabama in recent weeks. The 6-foot, 183-pound senior texted Spanish Fort coach Mark Freeman after the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic at Cramton Bowl with the news that he had been offered by Alabama and accepted. “I’m very proud of him,” Freeman said. “I am a big fan of Johnny Cook. He’s worked hard since we’ve been here. Alabama is getting a great player and a great person. I’m going to support him whatever he does in life.” Cook intercepted seven passes for the Toros (14-1) this season, returning two for touchdowns. He finished the season with 81 tackles and 23 passes broken up.

Signs of the impending Mayan Apocalypse are few and far between, but the Birmingham News’ columnist Kevin Scarbinsky getting it right could be an omen of uncomfortable significance. In a column appearing in the Sunday print editions of all three of Alabama’s major daily newspapers, Scarbinsky discusses the Southeastern Conference’s decision not to issue any suspensions for rough play during the SEC Championship Game on December 1. In it, he reaches an amazingly logical and correct conclusion:

Since 2008, Alabama has piled up a trophy case full of Associated Press All-America awards and then some. The Associated Press picks the best All-America team, in our opinion. So it means something that Alabama players have landed on AP lists so often since 2008. Nick Saban's record in the past five seasons includes 17 first-team AP All-America selections, six on second team and five on third team. Two players have earned three All-America selections in that period, including safetyMark Barron, who was third team in 2009, second team in 2010 and first team in 2011. Offensive lineman Barrett Jones made third team as a guard in 2010, first team as a tackle in 2011 and first team as a center in 2012.
