    Re: Alabama "cardinal"

I worked at a sporting goods store in the '80s. Bama ordered Russell uniforms thru us. There were only 3 reds then. Scarlet, Cardnal & Maroon. Cardnal was what Bama ordered.

It seems to me that Tennessee's shade of orange has varied some over the years, as well.

I used to be a manager for the men's track team at UA...so I worked in the equipment room "cage" everyday. I know from my time there that Nike did not have a color that fit Alabama the way Russell Athletics did. So, Nike had to create a color for us using the color code we gave them. All of the Nike gear used by the UA Athletics program used this same color. I want to say Rawlings had to do the same thing for baseball/softball...but am not 100% sure on that.

Maybe things have changed since then (this was almost a decade ago)...but I can assure you that Nike had a custom "Crimson" color made just for us according to the specs we gave them.
I remember my first game as a child and the amazing feeling I got when I first walked into Bryant-Denny. I still get that same feeling every single game.

It's gotten lighter as well. It used to be a deeper orange. Their story is that it was the color of the posies on "The Hill." I never saw a flower that color in my life. I call their orange "pumpkin."

Looks to me like we still purchase standard off the shelf color helmets, as they don't appear to be an exact match to the jersey colors, especially the numerals on our away unis. Doesn't bother me and I really like that we still use the throwback grey face-masks. I'm not as uniform-centric as some . . . just wanna win.

DISCLAIMER: I hereby reserve the right to discuss any game on the Alabama schedule I wish, at any time during the season, as I am not a part of the Crimson Tide football program. I am simply a fan who has no impact outside of the money I provide the athletic department via ticket and memorabilia purchases and the energy I can provide when I attend the games. 2009-2014, crimsonaudio

    Alright.

I'm sticking with Alabama Crimson Tide. 'Alabama Cardinal Tide' and 'Alabama Pantone (PMS) 201 Tide' don't roll off the tongue very well.

Sorry...just trying to give some insider info on the Crimson color we had from Nike when I was there. The main point was that Nike did not have a Crimson color before becoming our official uniform provider for athletics...and that they created that specific color just for us. It was only a little later that they started using it for the officially licensed stuff sold in stores.

As for the helmets...they are Riddell...I think...so it could very well be a different shade of red or Crimson than the jerseys.
