Better than Bear Bryant? Is it possible Nick Saban might have something over college football's all-time greatest coach? Yes, Saban has one talent that tops even the Bear. Nobody can evaluate and recruit players like Saban can, and that's why Alabama stands only one win from a third national title in four years. "I’ve never seen a stable full of recruits like he gets," said former NFL All-Pro guard John Hannah, an All-American at Alabama under Bryant. "I don’t see how he does it. I’ve never seen anything like it."

Notre Dame’s defensive front is unquestionably good. But Alabama’s offensive front is a veteran unit that has been playing together virtually intact for two straight seasons. There isn’t a better offensive line in college football today. In this matchup, you have to give the Tide an edge, however slight that edge might be.

Alabama. Notre Dame. Could the combination of the two venerable programs tonight in the BCS National Championship Game blow the top off the TV ratings? Industry insiders are thinking it has a chance. "I always judge how big the BCS game is by how many ticket requests I get," said Burke Magnus, ESPN's senior vice president for college programing. He smiled and added, "This is going to be a huge game."

If ever a defense reloaded rather than rebuilt, maybe it's Alabama's 2012 group. The statistics aren't quite as sterling as a year ago, but then again, the Crimson Tide's 2011 defense set a standard that few may reach. That team led the nation in total yards, points, rushing yards and pass defense, and only one other team (1986 Oklahoma) led all four categories that since the NCAA began keeping track of national statistics in 1937

If any one story stuck with Saban from his Dolphins tenure, it was from his first training camp, the first day of two-a-day practices. Saban held the second session at night, under the lights, and when it ended, offensive lineman Jeno James collapsed in the locker room, convulsed, vomited and nearly passed out, according to three people who witnessed the scene.

Alabama's 2012 Most Valuable Player, as voted by his teammates, has not yet been an every-down player for the Crimson Tide. On the official depth chart heading into Monday's BCS National Championship Game against Notre Dame, C.J. Mosley is not listed on the first line. Alabama's starting Will linebacker is listed as Nico Johnson or Mosley. But Mosley asserted himself as the Tide's top defensive playmaker this year right from the get-go. On Sept. 1, the junior intercepted a pass from Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown, putting 'Bama's season-opening rout of the Wolverines even further out of reach. Twelve games later, Mosley bookended his MVP campaign by making the most important play of Alabama's season. He jumped up and tipped Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray's last-second pass intended for a receiver in the end zone; it fell into the hands of another player inbounds, causing the clock to run out, preserving a 32-28 victory and setting up a BCS title clash against the Irish.
