Is D. Ball large enough to get a look at NG?

I think Pettway is going to be a pass rushing force sooner than later. He had a sack last night, and has been extremely quick off the ball all year when he's gotten the opportunity. He finished the year with 3.5 sacks in very limited duty.

I like the way you think.....of course that means the D will rival 2011's......that would be a tall order.

    Re: Thoughts on 2013's Defense.

I think LaMichael Fanning will be someone to watch. If he develops the way I think he will, he is going to be a terror on opposing teams. I also agree with someone else's sentiment a few posts back. I believe Vinnie needs to add a bit of weight and move to LB. It would serve him better, I think. The Dline will be fine. With as much as we rotated guys this year, we have plenty of depth. LB's are going to be the strongest part of the defense. That group is going to be amazing. The secondary is going to be deceptively good. I think Gneo Smith develops into the next Milliner, while Belue (with a year under his belt) will look a lot like Dre back there... The safeties should be ridiculous.. Landon Collins is real deal, and we all see how HaHa pushed his way into starting this year... Such a wealth of talent...

Our secondary could be so good that VS only sees the field in nickel and dime situations.

The D will be better if Jesse Williams and Dee Milliner are successfully replaced.
Pettway will be a pass rushing specialist.
I wonder how the competition between Fulton and Geno will play out.
I think that Landon will beat everyone else out and take Lester's spot.

McLain, Hightower, and Upshaw were a pretty darn good recent trio of linebackers.

Really tall. I'll say though if they buy in it could be another great one.

    Re: Thoughts on 2013's Defense.

I think Devall and Pagan are going to take the next step in 2013. Devall could legitimately challenge to start at Jack LB with a good offseason and Pagan is going to start in place of Square at SDE. DJ Pettway and Fanning are going to have a lot of snap opportunities too with Square and Dial gone. Ivory is going to be a good one at nose tackle.

Fulton could be like Harris in 2011 or Marquis Johnson in 2009. He hasn't had the career many thought he would have to this point but he has a Senior year and a lot of experience in the defense. If he can lock down an outside position opposite Belue, Saban can slide Geno Smith to star in nickel. I feel good about safety...a ton of depth and experience there.

Mosley needs to continue to improve on his run defense but I think this defense has a very darn high ceiling. Closer to 2009 or 2011 than 2010 and 2012.

IMO Pettway is our best pass rusher. he's a monster coming off the line. I also think Belue turns things around and has a great year. With all the great CB's we've had under Saban, not one looked great the first year under the system. And they all improved the next

Pettway will be a starter by the a&m game. I really want to see him and Fanning suplex Manziel like they did the notre dame rb last night. (Legally)

I've been thinking Pagan takes SDE, where do you think Pettway ends up? Wins SDE or takes WDE from Stinson?

Had we had one or two guys near the pass rushing ability of a Clowney, Porter or Montgomery our defense would have been better than last year. I don't know who steps up or if we find one via JUCO but it's the most important defensive issue we have.

ND had 270 yds in passing and virtually every one of the pass plays our secondary had about as good a coverage as you can have short of interference. An effective pass rush could have cut that total in half.
