Poll: Alabama's Dynasty v. Nebraska Dynasty

Now that we are a dynasty, lets compare it with the last dynasty. Nebraska has Frazier and those boys and they were bad. They went 60-3 and that is still consider the best five year run. Now we have us, having to go to a league championship game and probably the greatest D of all time and the leadership and the line. 61-7 in the last five year run. Which one is the best? You know who I got!

I don't see the actual poll ;p

That said, the breakdown on how difficult those schedules were:
Nebraska faced 11 Top 10 teams and 22 ranked teams
Alabama faced 14 Top 10 teams and 23 ranked teams
Nebraska's opponents had an overall record over that 5 year period of 387-286-8 (58.3%)
Alabama's opponents had an overall record over that 5 year period of 493-3050 (61.58%)

We lost more games, won as many titles, and played a tougher schedule - however, they lost fewer games than tougher games we played.
It would be a very difficult argument to make for either one being "better" than the other.

I know with absolute certainty that Alabama has faced significantly harder schedules than Nebraska did in their era. Go back and look at the teams that they played. They were horrible. Think Boise State bad. Even the Sooners were putrid during this era.

That doesn't make Nebraska a bad team, but it has always cast a shadow over their "dominance" in my mind.

No poll. It would be overwhelmingly in favor of the Tide. Just thoughts on it.

Compare how many times they played a top 3 team.
Nebraska did it five times, Alabama six, though as you can see, we've had considerably tougher sledding, playing FOUR #1 ranked teams while Nebraska played none:

Nebraska:
'94: #2 Colorado, #3 Miami
'95: #2 Florida
'97: #2 Washington, #3 Tennessee
avg ranking: 2.4

Alabama:
'09: #1 Florida, #2 Texas
'10: #1 LSU, #1 LSU
'12: #3 Georgia, #1 Notre Dame
avg ranking: 1.5

Me braska probably looked better but we played a tough schedule and always had the 1 vs 2 at then end of the year. Probably a push so far, but the good news is it isn't over yet.

Those Nebraska teams were more dominant during the run, but against lesser competition. The 1995 team was arguably one of the best teams of all time, though I think you can put the 2011 team in that category. I think both are equally good, and had they had the BCS format in 1997 Nebraska would have beat Michigan... I would give us the slight edge because of all the rules to create parody in college football. Most of the ranked teams they beat aren't very memorable (except the bowl wins).

1994:
#3 Colorado W 24-7
#6/#8 Miami W 24-17
1995:
#6/#7 Kansas State W 49-25
#4/#5 Colorado W 44-21
#9 Kansas W 41-3
#3/#2 Florida W 62-24
1996:
#8 Colorado W 17-12

Pretty impressive to have gone undefeated against all opponents who finished in the top 10 during those three years. However, 1995 accounts for over half of those games.

I'd say that the 1995 Nebraska team is about as good of a team as there has been in the modern era. There with 2001 Miami. Maybe a couple of others.

To even be compared to that Nebraska program is awesome. I can't give one run an advantage over another. They are both awesome, and pretty clearly, each is the premiere program of its time.

To make one point: Nebraska's record (I limited it to the four years not five) was attained against a schedule that won about half its games. Ours won more. Plus - Nebraska didn't have to compete recruiting with an in- state rival that also won a title.

And btw - their unbeaten Big 8 regular seasons was nothing new in 1994; they'd done it IN CONFERENCE in 78, 83, and 91. In fact, from 1978-1995, Nebraska only lost in conference to OU with the exceptions of a brief run by Colorado and a 92 upset to Iowa State.

Much more coming soon.

I always thought the 1997 title was Nebraska's, not Michigan's. I know it was a split, but I think Nebraska would have killed Michigan.

They went on the road against #2 UW and won by 2 TDs.
They beat #17 KSU by 30.
They beat TAMU in the Big12 Championship Game by 39.
They beat UT in the Orange Bowl 42-17.

No way, Michigan was pretty darn good that year. Charles Woodson and those guys would have been a great matchup. I don't remember hearing about NEB that year.

They also needed an illegal kick to beat Missouri.

And unlike us, they got shut out 19-0 by ASU during their run.

I think they would have beaten Michigan, but it would have been close. Michigan had a very good defense that year, an ordinary QB in Griese, and a couple of weapons at TB and WR. They were nothing spectacular on offense.

It would have been a great game though.
