The start of spring practice is still over a month away, but college football coaches have already turned the page from 2012 to 2013. With the passing of the NFL Draft deadline, along with Signing Day, coaches have a good idea about their roster and some of the holes facing their team. Even though it’s January, it’s never too early to start thinking about replacements for some of college football’s top departing players. USC had a disappointing 2012 campaign, but the Trojans still have the talent to compete for the Pac-12 South title. However, replacing quarterback Matt Barkley will be no easy task. Max Wittek made two starts late in the year and will begin spring practice as the favorite to start under center for USC. In addition to Wittek, the spotlight will be on Oklahoma’s Blake Bell, Stanford’s Barry Sanders Jr. and Wisconsin’s James White and Melvin Gordon – just to name a few.

The SEC certainly has to replace some sick talent during the offseason before heading into 2013. Players like Jarvis Jones, Damontre Moore, Tyler Wilson and Eddie Lacy will be noticeably absent, but there are talented underclassmen to pick up the slack who are either known or will announce their presence come September. Some replacements are already known, but most are not and position vacancies will be decided with position battles during spring practice and fall camp. Here’s an early look at who will replace the SEC’s 10 biggest names in 2013:

Les Miles isn’t sweating the mass exodus, so maybe everybody in Tigerland shouldn’t be sweating the 10 underclassmen leaving early for the NFL draft. That number swells to 11 if you count Tyrann Mathieu, but Mathieu didn’t play this past season for LSU after being dismissed and had no chance of returning in 2013. To put LSU’s 10 early NFL draft entrants into perspective, the entire SEC had 11 in 2012. Then again, the SEC saw that number climb to 33 this year. And, yes, there were a number of head-scratchers. That's always the case.
