How old is the Alabama script A? We had a discussion today about which one is older Alabama’s or Atlanta Brave’s. I know they are slightly different but whose was first?

This image is from 1958.

If you research it, you will find pics of Coach Bryant wearing a script A cap before the Braves were even in Atlanta.

So, we know that the Alabama script
has been around from the beginning of Coach Bryant's era. Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the script A originated at UA with Tilden Campbell's baseball teams in the 1930s and 40s.

And I believe Coach Bryant's cap pictured above is from the Baseball Squad.

So the next question:

When did it become the main logo for us versus the elephants used in the past?
The script A with the circle around it became official in 2001 or 2002.
It replaced that dreadful block ALABAMA with the elephant over it.
The famous A with the elephant tromping through it was retired around 1994 or so.

The script A, as in just the A not the circle A logo, actually first appeared on the 50 yard line at BDS in fRAN's first season. 2001. It was during the middle of that season. Seems like it might have been against Tennessee.

I think we may have done away with a midfield logo at some point late in the fRAN era or early in the Shula era. Then the circle A came along around 2004.

Edit: I just read the wikipedia link. They refer to the script A as the circle A. I guess I have my terms mixed up.

Indeed, in the 1958 photo, Coach Bryant wears a baseball cap. At aTm, Coach and his assistants wore baseball caps, too. One had a T and others did not. Of course, if this were color it would be a maroon cap with white T. In the second photo, Coach's cap has the T

There is nothing wrong about the "block A with the elephant stepping through it" Those of enjoying '78 and '79 NCs think they are pretty cool.

If you are referring to Bruce's post, I believe he was saying that the late 90s, early 00s logo was terrible (which it was). The one with the block "bama" and the elephant head and shoulders creepily staring over the top. :)

I grew up on the logo in the late 90s, why don't we use this one anymore?

Because it was awful. It's what we had when I was there, and I hated it. I much prefer the older and newer options. The script A is my favorite, though. Like our uniforms, it is classic and easy to identify. More than perhaps any other school, Alabama is about tradition. The late 90's logo felt like Alabama was trying to be "cool" and "modern." Alabama doesn't need to be modern to be cool.
