Does it seem like the staff is making a change in the type of lineman we go after - i.e., better able to handle the hurry-up offenses?
Not really. Liner, Vanderdoes, Adams, and Reed are all the same basic type and build of defensive linemen we've always recruited under Saban. This is just an extension of the status quo in that regard.

It's just so rare to see that many that advanced with skills in one class.

The staff wants disrupting lineman, and obviously they don't think we have enough on the team right now. Watch the tape, not many of the current players can beat one on one blocking, and that makes our blitz ineffective, which makes the holes in our scheme that much bigger. This is probably similar to the wide receiver problem a few years ago, we see how it has turned out.

I disagree with that statement completely. The new younguns are talented and will be major contributors but not have enough on the team or can't beat blocks one on one is just not true.

We did not have an Upshaw type player this year. It showed Alabama was forced to blitz to get pressure on the QBs.

It's not a secret that Alabama was lacking firepower in the edge rusher department last year.
The guys I thought he was discussing were not edge rushers like Courtney (LB). I thought he was speaking of Vanderdoes, Robinson and Adams, etc as in DL. I look at Ed Stinson and Pagan and some other unproven DE's who we really don't know if they can beat one on one blocking yet. My point is it's not like the cubbard is bare and we have to get these guys or teams are going to kill us with our current DL.

I think Saban's emphasis on DLs this year indicates we have needs in that direction this year...

I think another part of it is this seems like an excellent year for elite DL talent.

My take on the emphasis of D line recruiting is that CNS plans to platoon DL personnel packages. The HUNH offense is designed to limit rotation, so I think CNS is trying get the talent to have at least 2 elite DL lineups, that are interchangable on defensive series. It is really a great idea, and its not something that all schools could pull off. If you have 2 different lineups that are fairly equal in talent and ability, you can essentially cut the number of snaps in half for each DL unit. If the DL is able to stay fresh, the effectiveness of the HUNH offense is greatly diminished.

Sound thought process. Three sets of three, with the ability to jump in and out of the game to stay fresh all game. Suddenly eighty plays cut in thirds doesn't sound so bad.

This, IMO, is one of the most misunderstood concepts of CNS's defense. In the 3-4 defense, DL are not supposed to be the primary pass rushers - the LB's and other blitzers are designed to get the best pressure. Now, if a DL gives you that rare ability, that's gravy. What you really hope for is a guy like Darius who can move from outside to inside on passing downs and allow you to bring two guys like Upshaw off the edge. If we didn't have great firepower off the edge last year, it could be the fault of the LB's... not the DL.

here is how I see our RB chart as it exists on campus today.

TJ Yeldon starter Probably 2 more years.

after that we have a whole lot of questions:

Kenyan Drake - runs well but is smaller and was only allowed to play in garbage time last year. Will be in a fight for the #2 spot.

Demetrius Hart - Blown knee twice, have to question if he makes it back 100% plus he was a specialist.

Jalston Fowler - Blown knee, might not be 100% in 2013, was also a bit of a specialist, played more H-Back.

Derrick Henry - Amazing athlete but could well end up at LB, not too many 6' 3" feature backs these days. He will get a shot at RB but he's huge, not sure if he's quick enough for every down duty. (hoping he is but not betting the farm yet).

Tyren Jones - smaller running back, possible replacement for Hart if he can't make it back.

So if I'm Tenpenny or Kamera I see plenty of opportunity. Sure they could have an easier road to the field elsewhere but what's more important, playing, or playing, winning, and then holding trophies in your hand. Lots of people play college football, it's the champions who do something extraordinary.

In 2010 we had three running backs who had 400 or more yards and still had 34 carries left over to toss toward Demtrius Goode.

Tyren Jones measured 5'9", 212 on his Bama official visit 2 weeks ago. The 5'8", 185 listed on his rivals profile is from 10th grade. Jones is comparable in size to Emmitt Smith, Mark Ingram, Ray Rice, Frank Gore, and Doug Martin.

But when you have a young defensive backfield, your LBs have to assist in coverage a lot more. With a great backfield (ie 2009), you can add a lot more LB, CB, and Safety blitzes. Look at Texas A&M game. With LBs having to drop back more often and your DL just clogging up the line (no rush), he has time to throw and can do damage. Beast of a line that can get some push and a more experienced backfield with some of the linebackers we have in now and will come in, it's scary to think about what can be done.

The amount of top-shelf players that want to play for Alabama right now is blowing my mind!
