Tubby Smith is out at Minnesota after six years. Remember, this is the same AD who hired Shaka Smart from nowhere: cbssports.com/collegebasketb…

They will not get a better coach than Tubby Smith at the University of Minnesota.

ucla gets rid of howland...minnesota goes after cag...maybe the tide goes after howland? I'd take a coach that just won his conf championship and has been to the final 4 3 times in 10 years.

To me it's comical that they get one good run and all of sudden this guy is the greatest coach in the world. Does this guy run a clean program? How strong is the academic program at FGCU? If you want excitement and a great program Check out "the system" with Dave Arseneault at Grinnell College.

Maybe we can hire the FGCU guy if he leaves. Or Tubby for that matter.

Please no! I hated Howland at Pitt, much less now!

I would take that in a minute IF CAG left. I don't see it though.

The same coach that was in bed with the Pump Brothers? The same coach that when that relationship soured hired an AAU coach from Atlanta to lock up Jordan Adams and Tony Parker? SN, before Howland pulled that stunt we had a decent shot at landing Jordan Adams.

Doesn't matter, his team made it to the Dance!

Tubby Smith can't get any love. True, they had probably seen the best he was ever going to do for them, but then, "they" is Minnesota...

Hope they take him....
CM Newton ended up being one of the most successful head coaches Bama ever had. His teams in the mid-70's were dominant.
In one four year stretch his record was 114-18.
His first four years? He was 42-62.

He left Bama to rebuild Vanderbilt's Basketball program. He was in high demand because of his incredible record at Bama.
His first four years he went 59-59.

In 12 years at Bama Wimp Sanderson had a conference record better than 12-6 twice. In 1982 he led Bama to the NCAA Tournament.
We were 20-12 overall and tied for 8th in the SEC with an 8-10 conference record.

My points..it takes a coach more than four years to rebuild a program and it used to be a whole lot easier to get into the NCAA Tournament than it is now.

Coach Grant has been outstanding his entire career. His first three years at VCU his record was 76-25. His record at Bama now in year four is currently 86-51.

That's an overall seven year coaching record of of 162-72.

Very few coaches in the history of Basketball have had that good of a record in their first seven years.

You say you hope they take him. I say do whatever it takes to keep him because he's a great basketball coach, we're not going to find anyone better, and we shouldn't want to.

sip

And we've seen time and again that CBS and it's "experts" are always right.
I think there is a lot of wishful thinking from the "anti-Grant" crowd. What could happen is that UCLA goes after Donovan and get him. Then maybe CAG would go to UF.

Sip, you had me at hello but you lost me here.

We both watched some of Newton's finest teams not make the tournament because of limits on the field. The '74 team, SEC co-champs with Vandy, couldn't even go to the NIT because we hosted the Mideast regional that year and the NCAA had an arcane rule that you either made the tournament or you played host but you couldn't play anywhere else.

Much tougher then to play in March than it is now.
