Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 - December 19, 1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America. The Socialist Party candidate for President of the US, Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech.

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

He went on to say, "I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform."

Someone, not necessarily Norman Thomas, obviously said it. And whoever said it was absolutely right.
"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.

"A socialist no longer needs to run as a presidential candidate.. The Democrat Party has adopted their platform."

There! I said it. Indeed, it is true. Marxism has taken over the Democrat Party of my youth. :-(

I do not understand why Democrats would be so shy about the label.
Depending on how one defines the word "socialist," it is clear that the Democrat party is a socialist party.

If one defines the term in regards to ownership, complete of partial, of the means of production, I would say the Democrat party embraces socialist principles in a number of instances.
If one defines socialism as redistribution of wealth, clearly the Democrats, at least since 1932, endorse that idea, candidate Obama explicitly so.

Of course, so does the Republican party, they just believe in slower and less expensive/generous socialism.

This is the definition I learned in school. Can you give some specific examples? I really can't think of any meaningful examples. ( I wait to pounce:))

#1 Nope (wink! wink!)
#2 Nope (the more that are on the welfare rolls, the fewer that don't have private property)
#3 Nope (do the unions own Government? Or does Government own the Unions? Regardless -- I'd say that #3 is a big fat yes....)

VIDEO: John F. Kennedy - Inaugural Address 1960

The politics of Democrat President John F. Kennedy was to the right of former President George W. Bush, even. Since Kennedy's assassination, almost fifty years ago, our country has been on a down-hill slide toward socialism. During Republican administrations, that down-hill slide has only been not as steep.

"Ask not what your country can do for you ..."
