They never said that they were citizens. They were just green card holders. They came as minors with their parents, so the status would be dependent initially on the status of the parents. We don't know anything about the parents. Could be almost anything - skilled workers, political asylum seekers, etc...
CNN made the much criticized move of announcing the address of the parents so I imagine we'll find something out soon.
