I saw several players, especially on punts, who were wearing what looked like yellow covers on their helmets. What was the significance of that?

Most of the special teams players play for both sides. Since it was impossible to tell which side a player was on by jersey color, one side would slip a yellow cover on their helmets to differentiate.
those are beanies that fit over the helmets. Kick offs and punts are not live on a day. I imagine the beanies are to indicate that.
They are supposed to represent Auburn and Notre Dame Defenders.....yellow, is appropriate, isn't it?
The first response is correct. A player might be first team defense and second team punt return. So he would be wearing a red jersey but be out there with mostly white jerseys come punt time.

I just involuntarily stood at attention. Nobody minded that, it was singing the rest of the verse that made them look at me funny.
They were hiding next years WHITE helmets. Just checking fit and durability before they are placed in service.lol
