Don't worry. They've lawyered up and will prevent any NCAA action. Manziel will play even if the evidence is pretty damning and all common sense points towards him engaging in eligibility losing activities.

I agree.
Auburn laid the groundwork. They were guilty as hell, but the threat of legal action made the NCAA fall like a house of cards.

Texas A&M now has the blueprint for beating them.

Show me the attorney who says his client is up the creek without a paddle and I'll show you a man in the wrong career.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

Interesting credibility test: this attorney or the unnamed ESPN sources?

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

Jim Darnell, an attorney from El Paso, confirmed toUSA Today that he was retained “a couple of weeks ago” by the Manziels to represent their son amidst a reported NCAA investigation into allegations he was paid for signing autographs.

I agree, it's unlikely it's reached the formal inquiry stage yet. Probably just aTm at this point. But pretty clear they know it's coming.

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

I'd say a journalist vetting sources and publishing facts is about as important to their profession as an attorney reiterating his client's innocence. I have never really gotten this vector of attack by Aggie fans. Has ESPN been wrong before? Sure, but they are usually slow to stories anyway because of their cautious nature in regards to investigative journalism. If an unnamed source is good enough to bring down the President of the United States over Watergate then I imagine Manziel could be downed by a source who tips the case in anonymity too.

Considering the attorney is taking money to state his client's innocence regardless of his guilt, the attorney's level of credibility on this case is nondeterministic. Though I imagine he'll make good on his promise because the NCAA has no bite and the book is out on strong-arming their enforcement committee. Manziel is guilty and only the homers are bothering with the hairbrained conspiracies and ways he could actually be morally in the clear. He's guilty, deal with it...but all you need to whisk up some third party who did all this without Johnny knowing and he goes free. Looks like that is in order, so he'll play.

The "Journalist" Darren Rovell that broke this story...Did he properly vet his sources in the article that I'm about to post?...http://deadspin.com/5916245/how-a-teenager-with-a-fake-escort-service-duped-darren-rovell-and-cnbc

Rovell had a few heated exchanges with Manziels sister awhile back on twitter. I believe it was right after the Manning QB Camp. Kinda tired or I'd look it up. If a credible reporter broke the story, that would be one thing, but Rovell and Joe Schad are worthless in my opinion and should be writing for TMZ instead (at best).

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

Because Rovell broke the story doesn't invalidate how ESPN found a second broker who said Manziel asked for cash and showed ESPN a video where Manziel basically said the mafia line "sure would be a shame if something happened to this business" line. ESPN said their reporter SAW the video too. So that is a whole other level of throwing their weight behind the story.

Don't worry, he's going to play. But don't expect the rest of the nation to buy into whatever Aggie doublethink deemed necessary to validate ideas regarding "doing it the right way."

Re: Johnny Manziel investigated by NCAA

It's interesting to follow the drama going on...will he play, will they skate, what about the honor code, etc...

I'm trying to get my mind around the mindset that would get somebody to pay for something a twenty year old kid with good athletic skills has signed. I understand the autograph business is strong and well established, but I just don't get it.

There was a segment on the local news, a soldier was returning from Afganistan, they filmed him at the airport arriving. He was meeting his young daughter for the first time. Several people were there holding flags, but nobody wanted his autograph, even though I bet he wouldn't have charged any money for it.

I've been critical of aTm for the way they hired Fran, and there has been some pushback that the aggies weren't at fault. "Bama has done the same thing too." I'm not an insider enough to know how true that is, maybe so. I've got two responses to that:
It's ok when we do it
I'm not sure we've done anything quite like what the aggies pulled on us. I think TCU knew about Bama's interest when Fran was hired by us. Mike Price was courted openly, it wasn't a backroom deal. And as far as getting Saban from Miami, by that time, Miami's Don had run his mouth about the Bama program so bad that I have no problem hiring their coach.

One thing that stands out to me...the famous honor code of the aggies seemed not to apply when they hired a liar like Fran, because they knew he was lying to Bama when they hired him.

We've got a good aggie posting here these days, I'm not arguing that they are all bad. But I just don't like aTm, the deal with Fran was my first real introduction to them and they blew that first impression with me.

As best I remember, I think Stallings was disgusted at the way the aggies hired Fran, I was too.

I understand the angst associated with coach fran...and I was not happy about it either. That being said, it DID get the wheels rolling, along with Mike Price's hiring/firing, the results of Coach's DuBose and Shula, to finally, the hiring of one Coach Nick Saban. Would Bama be where it is today without that first domino falling? Can't say. Can only surmise. It's like breaking your leg and missing going to Indonesia for Christmas '04. Yeah, you missed the trip, but you didn't get swallowed up by a Tsunami either. Good thing you broke you leg...right? Speaking of Tsunami's...Roll, Saban Tsunami, Roll!

Roll Tide, Roll...A'ight!

Funny, I work in a field where I work with 'famous people' all the time, yet the only person I've ever asked for an autograph was a WWII veteran I met in Normandy this year.

I'm in agreement with you on Schad, I don't know Rovell's previous work.
The longer this drags out the more likely Nothing will happen. The play book is in place for how to handle this just see Cam Newton. Your school hired a firm out of Birmingham AL for a reason, I'm sure you have good lawyers in TX, but these guys Specialize in this.

From what I know about these brokers, they usually pay somebody, but if no one talks nothing happens.

It looks like Gene Marsh and his "give them everything they might want before they ask" approach has been replaced as the go-to guy in dealing with the NCAA.
