(CNN) -- Ray Price, the Nashville star whose trademark "shuffle" beat became a country music staple, has died at age 87, his agent said Monday.

Price's 1956 single "Crazy Arms" spent 20 weeks atop the country charts and introduced a bass-driven, four-four rhythm that became a touchstone of the Nashville sound -- a rhythm later dubbed the "Ray Price beat."

"Ray expanded country music to the masses," Bobby Roberts, Price's agent, said in a written statement. "He was a true gentleman that absolutely cared about his fans."

Kris Kristofferson wrote, "For The Good Times". He never could get the song to Ray Price through normal Nashville publishing channels.
One day he heard that Ray was going to be playing golf, so he hired a helicopter pilot. They flew over the course, spotted Ray, and landed the chopper in the middle of the fairway. Kristofferson got out and said, "I'm not leaving til you hear this song", pulled out a little cassette player, played the song, and the rest is history.
Ray had a great great voice.
He and Willie Nelson ended up being pretty good friends, but most people don't know that they once didn't speak for years because Ray's prize rooster killed one of Willies wives chickens, so she shot and killed his rooster lol..That's another story.
Ain't nothin like Nashville in those days.
He'll be missed...
