Would Coker be the 2014 QB answer? Any info re his past performance? Size, HS stars, remaining playing time? Thanks!

Re: QB Jacob Coker?

He has some playing experience. A big time arm. He was a three star recruit out of St Pauls in Mobile. Alabama recruited him but not as hard as they should have. He almost won the job ahead of Jamis Winston this fall. He would probably start for us this fall which would be ideal because we have some talent at QB but it's all young. Another year to build them up would be better than throwing them out there and crossing our fingers. He will have two years eligability left but will be looking to have a huge year and move to the NFL, which would be fine with us :)

Doe sanyone who followed his recruiting rememeber why he was only a 3*? With his measurables and athleticism you would think he would be rated higher than that. Was there something holding back in the final rankings?

Re: QB Jacob Coker?

Since this is quickly becoming the worst-kept secret in college football, let me add for the file:

Coker has sought and obtained his release from Florida State, and is currently surveying the transfer landscape. He's looked at a few schools outside of Alabama, but we are very interested in him and obviously offer him the best transfer destination. Saban actually met with Coker and his family in their home when he was on Mobile yesterday for the Senior Bowl, and it would be a monumental shock if he ended up anywhere other than Tuscaloosa.

At this juncture, Coker is headed to Alabama, simple as that. He does have a heavy workload to complete this spring at FSU in order to graduate, but it's feasible and since he won't participate in spring practice for FSU, that will help him finish out his undergraduate coursework.

Can he live up to the hype? Can he seize the starting job and play at a high level coming in during the summer? We'll see, but for now there is no reason to believe he won't be in Tuscaloosa next season. Now it's mainly just a matter of figuring out exactly what all is contained in this bill of goods.

Basic issue was St. Paul's ran the Wing-T in his junior season (Coker took over the starting job after McCarron came to Tuscaloosa), so he was never really on the radar screen for the most part. He had a strong season as a prep senior after they switched to a pro-style scheme, but that's really too late in the game to get noticed. The so-called recruiting experts never really looked twice at the kid, and the only reason he even got a three-star rating was because of who he committed to.

It was actually just random luck he ended up at FSU. He went to Tallahassee on his own for one of their camps, lit up the weekend, and the FSU staff was shocked as to what they had on their hands. They offered him that weekend, got a commitment a few days later, and that was the end of it. We kicked the tires on him towards the end, but we already had a quarterback (Ely) and it was just too late in the game.

Hindsight 20/20, we made a mistake not recruiting and signing him out of high school, and Saban and company have apparently admitted as such to the family.

Most of the reasons have already been covered, but he also had a late growth spurt. So, you couple that with the system his school was running, and he was kind of easy to miss. But, he shows up to the FSU camp, and he's this tall, athletic kid with a great arm... well they were all over that. The recruiting services missed to, for what it's worth, but the analysis now is that he's a legit NFL prospect.

The only thing I see keeping him away from Alabama now, is if he can't get the schoolwork he needs done. Otherwise, he's a perfect fit and physically he's basically everything you could ask for. He's kind of like a more athletic version of Mettenberger. If you want a good example though, NFLDraftScouts has him as the #5 QB in his class.

Re: Potential QB Transfer Jacob Coker Updates

Every pic I see of them together shows that Coker is a bit taller.
Then again, Winston has the posture of a duck, complete with that weird waddle... so they could be about the same height. Coker is certainly not shorter...

LOL - I agree, but I was judging mainly by shoulder height. Unless Jameis has Peyton Manning's neck (when standing up straight), there's no way he is taller than Coker! :)

One Super bowl QB is 6'4" and one is 5'10". Who gives a crap how tall Coker is, can he play QB and win at Bama?

You probably know this, but QB height matters a lot in Alabama's offense. Consider how many more passes GMac had knocked down vs. AJ, and he is only 2 inches shorter. If the QB is too short in a pro-set offense, the o-line has to create "throwing lanes" or the QB has to move around.
