..Songs that not only rock melodically but actually tell a story....

It's a toughie but I'll go with these..

(5) "Stairway To Heaven"- Led Zeppelin
I'm not even quite sure what Robert Plant's singing about, but it's definitely filled with raw emotion and is sincere, and the breaks in the melody build it up and up and up until the very end..

(4) "Dust In The Wind"- Kansas
A poetic masterpiece in my opinion with a truly phenomenal guitar lick.

(3) "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights"--Meat Loaf
This song, to me, is brilliantly creative and is almost a movie in itself, from a first date, to first time, to marriage, to regretting that any of it ever happened. Meat Loaf nailed the vocal and the melody arrangement is just phenomenal. Song totally rocks.

(2) "Like A Rolling Stone"-Dylan
So far ahead of it's time it's beyond amazing. I think, of all his songs, this one was Dylan's special moment of inspiration. No other song he ever did sounded anything even similar to this one. Great story-Great song!

...and my winner is...(drum roll please)

(1) "Jungle Land"--Springsteen
This song, in the words of my 24 year old son, "is like a play". It's one night in a Jersey City, and Springsteen dramatizes it like no other song I've ever heard.
The musical arrangement is symphonic. Up, down, hard, soft, fast, slow, happy, sorrowful. It captures every emotion. The sax solo in the middle is the greatest, most energetic, touching, toe tapping, solo in history.
This song is just simply untouchable in my opinion as a clear number one.

What say ye I ask?? :)

sip

I don't know that I can truly pick a top 5 because I have so many that I enjoy. I was tempted to include songs from Clapton, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, etc.

Here's my attempt at a top 5 in no particular order

5. Sympathy for the Devil - The Rolling Stones

4. Tuesday's Gone - Lynyrd Skynyrd

3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

2. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

1. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd

Man. I guess it depends on how you define rock.

No particular order:

- When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin
- Cochise by Audioslave
- Fade to Black by Metallica (if you assume metal is a sub genre of rock)
- Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana (this one is probably more sentimental, since it came out while I was in high school and seemed very relateable at the time)
- The entire Appetite for Destruction album by Guns N Roses (my favorite band and I simply can't pick one song off this album that is better than the others).

Sip, hard to pick 5 when there are so many-here's mine in order:
1. Can't Find My Way Home - BlindFaith (side note-only album to make #1 on the charts with no song breaking the top 10).
2. I'm A Man - Chicago (Terry Kath was the all time greatest guitarist).
3. Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys - Traffic (hard to beat Clapton and Winwood).
4. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull (always great with his lyrics and music).
5. Lighter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harem (one of the few songs I liked by them).

Hard to leave out Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Pink Floyd, Led Zep.....

First of all, I will never understand the infatuation people have with "Stairway to Heaven." Back in the 80s we were told if you played it backwards, well, something, and people would request it. I thought it was just plain lame, and I still do. And if you disagree, you're wrong - and since my undergrad is Music Education, I'm right and you're wrong.

Now with that psychosis out of the way, in no particular order

Hotel California
Bohemian Rhapsody
More Than A Feeling
Born To Be Wild
The Joker
