Crimson Tide and Tigers to meet in Montgomery for sixth straight year

Coming off a 12-6 victory over No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, the Alabama Crimson Tide (5-5, 0-0 SEC) will travel to Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday night to take on the Auburn Tigers (6-5, 0-0 SEC) in the Sixth Annual MAX Capital City Classic. First pitch for the game at Riverwalk Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Rays Double-A Affiliate Montgomery Biscuits, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. In last year's game, Auburn posted a 6-3 win to run its streak to five straight wins in the annual classic.

Alabama is currently 1-3 on a five-game road swing that wraps up on Tuesday night with the MAX Capital City Classic. The Tide opened the road swing with a 2-1 loss at Southern Miss on Feb. 26, before dropping two of three games at No. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette over the weekend. Alabama has two series wins this season after winning two of three games against Saint Louis and Stephen F. Austin to open the year. Auburn enters the non-conference midweek game with a 6-5 record after winning two of three games against Presbyterian over the weekend. After dropping the series opener 10-6, the Tigers won the series with a 3-0 win on Saturday and a 12-5 victory on Sunday.

About the Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide is hitting .254 as a team this season, while averaging 3.9 runs and 9.1 hits per game. The 12 runs against ULL on Sunday were the most for the Tide since scoring 15 runs against Samford on March 19, 2013. The 21 hits against UL-Lafayette on March 2, marked the first 20-hit performance for UA since having 20 against Tennessee on March 17, 2013, and the most since having 23 hits against Illinois-Chicago on Feb. 27, 2010.

The Alabama pitching staff has been outstanding this season, posting the fifth best ERA in the SEC with a 2.25 mark. In 92 innings, Alabama has given up 28 runs (23 earned) on 64 hits with 68 strikeouts and 39 walks. Opponents are hitting just .207 against the Tide this season. In 47 innings this season, the Tide bullpen has allowed just 10 runs (9 earned) for a 1.72 ERA, while allowing a .244 batting average. Alabama is 4-2 when playing at Sewell-Thomas Stadium and 1-3 away from home this season.

Offensively, the Tide is paced by senior first baseman Austen Smith, who has a team-high .333 batting average, after hitting .417 (5-for-12) last week, to go along with a team-leading seven RBI. Georgie Salem leads the team with 14 hits and is second on the team with a .318 batting average and Ben Moore has scored a team-high seven runs, is second with six RBI and is third on the club with a .275 average.

Last week against Southern Miss, Eicholtz threw five innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in his first career start. For the year, Eicholtz has given up just an unearned run in 10 innings with seven strikeouts and four walks, and opponents are hitting .176 against him.

About the Auburn Tigers

Following a three-game series win over Presbyterian last weekend, Auburn enters the MAX Capital City Classic with a 6-5 record. The Tigers are ninth in the SEC in hitting with a .270 team batting average, while averaging 4.2 runs and 8.4 hits per game. The Auburn pitching staff ranks 10th in the SEC with a 2.73 ERA and the Tigers are allowing 3.6 runs while giving up 7.4 hits per outing.

Leading the Tigers offense this season is senior outfielder Ryan Tella with a .433 batting average through 11 games, to rank fifth in the SEC. Damek Tomscha has the team's only home run this season. He leads the team and ranks 11th in the SEC with 10 RBI and he's second on the club with a .370 batting average. Tomscha also leads the team with a .519 slugging percentage and a .528 on-base percentage. Anfernee Grier leads the squad with 14 hits and three doubles while hitting .350 in 11 starts in right field.

Auburn will start sophomore RHP Justin Camp (0-1, 2.13 ERA) in the game. Camp has made three appearances with one start this season. He was the losing pitcher in his only start of the season with the Tigers dropped a 9-3 decision to Alabama State on Feb. 18. This season Camp has thrown 12.2 innings, allowing three runs on none hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Jay Wade has a 0.00 ERA in 5.2 innings while allowing two hits with three strikeouts and a .105 opponent's batting average this season. Terrance Dedrick has made four appearances out of the bullpen, posting an 0-1 record with a save and a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings.

All-Time Series Versus Auburn

In a series that dates back to the 1896 season, Tuesday's game between Alabama and Auburn will mark the 273rd meeting between the two teams. Following a three-game series win over the Tigers in Auburn last season, the Tide holds a 149-123 advantage in the all-time series. The Tigers have dominated the MAX Capital City Classic by winning all five games in the history of the event. Against Auburn, Alabama is 3-2 over the last five games, 7-3 over the last 10 and 11-9 over the last 20 games played between the two schools. Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard is 10-8 all-time when coaching against Auburn. Auburn head coach Sonny Galloway will be coaching against the Tide for the first time in his career.

2013 MAX Capital City Classic

In the 2013 MAX Capital City Classic, Auburn posted a 6-3 win over the Crimson Tide to record their fifth win in the event. Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Jordan Ebert sacrifice fly. Alabama responded with a three-run fourth, that included an RBI double by Austen Smith and a RBI by Kyle Overstreet. Auburn answered in the top of the fifth with a three -run inning off UA reliever Tucker Hawley, when the Tigers scored two unearned runs. Leading 4-3 in the ninth, Auburn added a pair of insurance runs when Garrett Cooper delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded off Justin Kamplain.

On Deck For the Tide

After the annual midweek classic against Auburn, Alabama returns to Sewell-Thomas Stadium to host the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in a three-game series this weekend. The series against the Delta Devils will begin on Friday, March 7, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday's game will start at 2 p.m., and the series finale will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Alabama is 17-1 all-time against MVSU after posting an 8-3 victory in Tuscaloosa on May 7, 2013.
