If I understand it correctly the plane didn't just disappear from a radar screen, it had actually passed beyond radar coverage so we dont really know when it crashed or where it was, meaning that there are literally thousands of square miles of open sea where it could have gone down.
This keeps getting weirder and weirder. Passenger cell phones are still ringing.

That makes me think the plane was hijacked and diverted to an airstrip. However, that is a big plane. It would take a long run way and big hanger to hide it.

In all seriousness, I won't be surprised if the Chinese "accidentally" shot it down while testing a new missile defense system or something like that. Maybe the plane strayed into their testing zone and was either shot down by a laser or a missile.
What does that prove?
Doesn't a cell phone ring whether or not the phone is still operating or not?
Isn't the only other options that 1) it go directly to voice mail when turned off or 2) the call is actually answered?
I don't understand the significance here.
Most of the time when a phone is off it'll just go straight to VM - there' won't be a ring. Typically there's only a ring when it's ringing on the other end. Hence the reason people are hoping this means the airplane isn't on the bottom of the ocean.
