A-Day Game Good, Bad, and Ugly

Good - Jonathan Allen(!), DJ Pettway, Tim Williams, and the D-Line overall. Robert Foster, Chris Black, and Ardarius Stewart looked really good catching the ball. Tony Brown is going to be a star. This defense has the potential to be really good! TJ looked much healthier than he did down the stretch, and Drake looked really good - until he once again fumbled.

Bad - The O-line struggled most of the day, and the QB battle is clear as mud. The O line has plenty of time to improve, and I think they will. As far as QB's, Bateman looked to better than anybody else, but he was inconsistent. Sims looked like Sims has looked, there is really no other way to say it.

Ugly - I'm afraid we are really going to miss Cade Foster and I know we are going to miss Mandell. Hopefully somebody can step up. If Reuben Foster doesn't keep his head up, it could really be ugly!

Good- The entire defensive front 7 from both 1st and 2nd teams. The defense was lights out for most of the game, and several young players were really setting themselves apart. Running game looked solid despite the inconsistency of the offensive line. Our receivers also showed amazing depth and athleticism. I also thought the overall defensive scheme was really good. We had a nice variety of blitzes and the coverages were well called. It was a well called ballgame on the defensive side, albeit that they didn't have to face a complex offense.

Bad- Overall inconsistency. Both of the top 2 quarterbacks would have flashes of brilliance, and then would look awful for a while. Offensive lines for both teams would open a nice hole for a back, and then give up a sack the next. Drake's fumble problems don't seem to be have been solved yet, and the 3-5 backs on the depth chart didn't look as explosive as I was hoping for. I was also disappointed that we didn't have more pass plays designed for our TE's. As big of a weapon as we have in Howard, I fear that he may be under-utilized once again. The fact that our 3rd string qb is also our backup punter. I really hoped we would show more depth in the specialists than that.

Ugly- Kicking game. Griffith does not appear to be the fix we were hoping for. I'm hoping he just has some mechanical flaws that can be fixed as he still got some strong boot into his kickoffs, but his accuracy was deplorable. Plus the ball did not appear to be coming off his foot well at all.

Unnecessary- The shots that will now undoubtedly be coming from the Anti-Blake Sims crowd. No, he's not the answer to our needs at quarterback, and thankfully he shouldn't have to be. However, he's given everything he has to the betterment of this football team, and he has earned our respect even if he isn't the quarterback we hoped for. (Rant over)

On the first missed field goal it looked to me like Griffith got his hips turned to quickly.
I couldn't tell what it was, but I knew it had to be mechanical. It was too close in to just mi.... the ball, and I haven't seen a knuckleball on a kick that bad since some of Jamie Christensen's back in the 2005 season. I hope Griffith can improve prior to the start of the season, but it's not promising when your highly touted kicker misses a chip shot and an extra point.

Let's give Griffith a little more of a chance to prove himself. Don't judge the start of his career at UA by an impossible field goal attempt and a spring game.

The Good - Our front seven is beastly. I see two or three Courtney Upshaws, three or four Marcel Dareuses (Allen, Tomlinson, Robinson), and a pair of Hightowers (Ragland and Foster). As excited as I was about Hand, Evans, and Miller, those guys are gonna have to wait their turn behind these monsters. Receivers are immensely talented. Bateman looks good but he continually disregarded the safety coming over on deep routes. He threw some pretty passes, but a lot of those are either gonna be picked or get his receiver a concussion.

The Bad - OL is anywhere from mediocre to abysmal depending on how good the DL really is. Blake Sims is the exact same guy as last year, but he won't be our QB so I won't dwell on it.

The Ugly - I just hope we have a great redbone offense and never need a FG to win a game.

The Good--I think our front seven is way more talented than those you mention. That's NO slight against those you mention, but these new kids are special, and more athletic, by far.

The bad?--I'll agree. The offensive lines, on both sides, stunk--and that's giving them the benefit of the doubt.

The Ugly?--Griffith will be all right. He's going to have some confidence issues initially, because Coach Saban made his first career kick the biggest kick of his career. It really wasn't fair to the kid at all. I don't think he was even warming up on the sidelines. It was like, "Adam, I know you're cold, but go in and kick a 57 harder, on the road, to win the SEC West".
Don't give up on him just yet.

The good- Defense all around. Tony Brown is special.

The bad- Offense however I'm not gonna worry over it. I don't think CNS was letting them do too much and BS looked lost but I'm sure yet will keep working with him. Bateman looked like the number 1 as of now.

Ugly- Special teams. How hard is it to recruit a kicker??? Seriously!!!

I think you're selling Dareus short. I'll agree with the others. But we only had one Upshaw and one Hightower on the 2011 defense, and no Dareus. My point is that we have a plethora of guys who could fill in those roles. Imagine the 2011 defense with several Upshaws, Hightowers, and Dareuses.

And while we don't have an experienced corner of Dre's caliber, we have two young Dres comin in who I expect to defy the usually unforgiving freshman season of cornerbacks in the SEC. Don't know why I feel that way. Call it a hunch.

GOOD:
Tim Williams, Dalvin Tomlinson, Jonathan Allen, Ryan Anderson, Reuben Foster, DJ Pettway, Tony Brown, Reggie Ragland...they all had whales of individual games.

On offense: Cooper Bateman. Took chances and gave his WRs a chance to be playmakers. Tried to fit a lot of passes into tight spaces. TJ Yeldon managed to quietly put up nearly 100 yds behind a suspect o-line and bad QB play (more on that later). Kenyan Drake. Ardarius Stewart. Robert Foster. Chris Black. All having solid individual contributions.
Alec Morris doing an excellent job as a punter. And not just a "oh he punts well for a QB" kinda deal. He actually kicked it high and well.

Bad :
Landon Collins whiffed on a few tackles today. Had Yeldon dead to rights and let him get by for another 15 yds. Had knockout shots on Cooper a couple of times and let up (can't say I blame him...and I'm glad he did). Dropped an easy pick.
Kenyan Drake, as good as he looked, put the ball on the ground and it translated to points for the opposition.
Reuben Foster. The kid is a headhunter. Played a whale of a game. A half at least. Had two knockout shots on Drake. Took them both, but failed to wrap up on either one. The first one led to a second effort 1st down for Drake. The 2nd led to another stinger.

Ugly:

No two ways to put it, Blake Sims had a terrible outing despite the late TD pass (which was against walk-ons). And it goes beyond mechanics. He was called for a penalty late that would have been a 10 second runoff and ended the game. There were a few times where I saw Christion Jones frantically trying to get the play from him at the line. He just didn't show good command of the offense from where I was sitting.

Offensive line play was...offensive....for both squads. The pick 6 that DJ Pettway got was because Freshman LT Cam Robinson blocked the wrong man on the screen play. The 1st team offensive line looked better than the 2nd team but that's not saying much. They still didn't do much in opening running lanes for Yeldon and Henry and Sims rarely got a chance to see cleanly down the field. The second team offensive line made our 2nd team d-line look like the love child of the Steel Curtain and Purple People Eaters.

Our place kicking was just....BAD. The only thing that worked was the snapping..so kudos to Cole Mazza for that. But we have a new holder (AJ & Mandell our 1 & 2 holders from last year, are gone) and of course a new kicker. Griffin was the guy we went and got after the home loss to LSU in 2011. I was under the impression that he was The One. But to hear Coach Saban say that there will be competition in the fall when JK Scott gets here REALLY concerns me. I mean...REALLY concerns me.

Worst case scenario, we got a strong defense with plenty of playmakers. Maybe they'll have to carry us this year.

BONUS Good:
We got 5 commitments today (4 from Top 100 players) and more coming.

5-star CB Minkah Fitzpatrick
5-star WR Calvin Ridley
4-star ATH Shawn Burgess-Becker
4-star LB Leo Lewis
4-starWR Jovon Durante

As a Bama fan, nothing gives me that bad feeling in the pit of my stomach like poor OL play. As an OL, you have to explode when the ball is snapped, like you're running full speed down a hill. Talent is good. Attitude matters more. You might not be the most talented guy, but if you go to bed dreaming about knocking guys on their backsides, you'll have a lot of success. Sometimes today our OL looked like a ball having the air let out of it. Just no "oomph" to their game and I hate to see that.

It would concern me more if there was no kicker competition in the fall

I'm with you Sip. I saw this kid in H.S. He is the real deal. Not sure what happened today but he will get it straightened out.

I think I've heard this before. I see no reason to believe any kicking issues will get worked out. We are going to have to hope we don't need a late FG bc we pretty much always lose games like that.

The Good - I have a few months until I really have to worry.
The Bad - I'm already worried.
The Ugly - I think maybe I shouldn't have watched. :eek2:

I hope you're right about Griffith, but when people watching warmups and practices saying the kicking was so bad that it was "comical" doesn't make me feel good about it. The miss on that FG and the extra point were UGLY kicks, no matter how you want to spin it.

The good... DEFENSE, Morris did a pretty good job punting.
The bad... OFFENSIVE LINE, Sims is unable to operate the Offense we ran today.
The ugly... Griffin... Maybe should have included under the bad. We need a Field Goal Kicker...
Vanilla Offense... We certainly didn't give anything to teams scouting us...
