Burrows earns second conference weekly honor of the season
April 21, 2014
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama closer Thomas Burrows was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Burrows made three appearances for the Crimson Tide last week, where he picked up saves in three straight games for the Tide.
Burrows closed out three of the four wins for Alabama, as he got the save against UAB on Wednesday, before closing out both wins in the Tennessee series. In collecting saves in three straight games, Burrows gave up just one hit with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
In 1.2 innings against UAB, Burrows had two strikeouts and two walks to pick up his sixth save of the season. In 1.2 innings in the series opener at Tennessee, he had three strikeouts and retired all five batters he faced. In Alabama’s come-from-behind win on Saturday, he threw a scoreless ninth inning, allowing a hit with one strikeout to preserve the second win of the season for Jay Shaw.
This season Burrows has been a force for the Tide at the back end of games. In 18 appearances, he has a 4-1 record and is 8-for-8 in save opportunities. His eight saves are tied for the fourth most in the SEC and ranks 24th in the country. He has a 0.73 ERA (2 runs) with 26 strikeouts in 24.2 innings and is holding opponents to a .105 batting average.
LSU’s Conner Hale was selected as the SEC Player of the Week and Kentucky’s Logan Salow was the conference’s pitcher of the week.
Burrows and the Crimson Tide will return to the diamond on Tuesday night when they host the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, with first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT from Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
