Crimson Tide to play Bulldogs for second time this season

Coming off a Southeastern Conference series loss at South Carolina, the No. 12-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (29-15, 13-7 SEC) travels to Birmingham, Ala. to take on the Samford Bulldogs (26-18, 10-8 SoCon) on Wednesday night. First pitch for the non-conference midweek game is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT from Joe Lee Griffin Field on the Samford campus.

The Tide is slated to start freshman RHP Geoffrey Bramblett (3-1, 3.77 ERA). Bramblett will be making his third start and 13th appearance of the season. Samford will also start a freshman, as RHP Cody Pugh (3-3, 5.24 ERA) will make his second start against the Tide this season. Pugh has made 10 appearances with seven starts this season.

For the fifth straight week, Alabama is ranked in all five national polls, but after a 1-3 week, the Tide dropped slightly in every national ranking. This week, the Tide is ranked No. 12 by Baseball America, No. 14 by Perfect Game USA, No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 20 by both the NBCWA and in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

About the Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide is sixth in the SEC with a .281 batting average, while averaging 5.3 runs and 9.6 hits per game. Over the last 10 games, Alabama is hitting .305 with 16 doubles, two triples and eight home runs. When the Tide scores three or more runs they are 28-5, but 1-10 when scoring less than three runs. Alabama has had 10 or more hits in 24 games this season, while reaching the 10-hit mark in 12 of the last 17 games. Alabama has 30 home runs in 44 games (third in the SEC and 22nd nationally) surpassing its 2013 season total of 26 home runs in 63 games. The 30 home runs are the most for Alabama since the bat change following the 2010 season.

Ben Moore has hit safely in the last nine games and is hitting .486 (18-37) with four doubles, a triple, three home runs, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored over that stretch. He's had at least two hits in eight of the nine games during the streak. He is second on the team with a .318 average, 11 doubles and 28 RBI and leads the team with six home runs and 34 runs scored. After missing three games with a bruised wrist, Austen Smith started the last seven games, posting a .400 (8-20) average with three doubles, two home runs, five RBI and four runs scored since the injury. Smith leads the team in five offensive categories including batting average (.362), home runs (6), RBI (31), slugging (.585) and on-base percentage (.464). Casey Hughston has hit safely in eight of the last nine games, posting a .371 (13-35) average over that time. He had the game-winning RBI on Saturday against South Carolina, before throwing out the potential game-tying run at the plate after giving the Tide the lead.

About the Samford Bulldogs

The Samford Bulldogs enter Wednesday night's game with a 26-18 overall record, after dropping two of three games to Western Carolina last weekend. The Bulldogs have won five of their last eight games, and are currently 10-8 in the Southern Conference, good for third place in the league standings. Samford is hitting .278, with 45 home runs and 88 doubles this season. The Bulldogs pitching staff has a 5.73 team ERA, while allowing opponents to hit .276 against them.

Frankie Navarrete is leading the team with a .365 average, with seven RBI and 10 runs scored in 27 games. Tyler Filliben has a .338 average and is one of three players that are tied for second on the team with eight home runs. Caleb Bryson, who is hitting .307, leads the team in home runs (9) and RBI (41). Drew McWhorter is hitting .314 and Heath Quinn has a .312 average and is third on the team with 38 RBI.

Cody Pugh has made 10 appearances with seven starts as a freshman, posting a 3-3 record with a 5.24 ERA. Pugh started against Alabama earlier this season, where he took the loss after allowing five runs in 3.1 innings. Andrew Gracia leads the team with 23 appearances, posting a 2-0 record with 11 saves. Garcia has not allowed an earned run in 25.2 innings this season.

All-Time Series vs. Samford

Wednesday's game between Alabama and Samford will mark the second meeting of the season. UA defeated the Bulldogs, 12-1, when the teams met in Tuscaloosa on March 11. In a series that dates back to the 1894 season, Alabama is 92-15 all-time versus Samford. Including this season's victory, Alabama has defeated the Bulldogs in six straight games, while posting a 6-4 record in the last 10 meetings. UA has won the last three games played at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

On Deck for the Tide

Following Wednesday's game at Samford, Alabama welcomes SEC-leading Florida to Sewell-Thomas Stadium for a three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:35 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on CSS. Game two of the series, which will be televised on CBS Sports Net, begins at 3:05 p.m. CT, and the series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. CT on Sunday and will be available on ESPN3/WatchESPN.
