I understand the tendencies to wallow and analyze. I just wish we could have a time limit as a fan base. Like others I have had my time of reflection.
What I will do is jump to a defense of Coach Saban.
While some do not like Saban's approach, I personally prefer it. Yes the game is more important to us fans, MAYBE they would perform better if he jacked them up emotionally more for this one than the others. I just do not think that is the best way to run an overall program.
As for jumping into A.J. after the LSU game. I personally thought he was trying to do what he thought was the best for A.J. He learned that A.J. played better with a little emotion. So he showed a little emotion. Nothing more or less than that.
As to the statement that he is a poor in game coach, I couldn't disagree more. Does he make mistakes? Sure he does. Does he make decisions that turn out wrong, but are not really a mistake? Probably every game, and obviously it happened in this one. I would still rather have him on the sidelines running the overall game than sitting back and watching after preparing the team.
the 57 yard field goal attempt was a bad decision and serious mistake and it cost us the game and more...although i think we would have lost in overtime at that point because we were completely deflated anyways.
it's quite obvious that LSU is THE game for saban when it comes to the conference schedule and we seemed to let up after that game as if it was smooth sailing after that.
and at the risk of pulling a "we told you so," i and some others interjected in the "pick the score" thread about the iron bowl (in which the general consensus was that we would win by 4 touchdowns) that the game would be much closer than anyone expected and that it could be an ugly result for us. we were generally "mooed" off the page.
for whatever reason, saban doesn't focus on auburn the way he does on LSU and as a result, we can only beat them under his watch when they are just this side of terrible.
as for being a "poor" in game coach...i wouldn't go that far, but in-game management (and half-time adjustments) are clearly his biggest weaknesses as a coach.
he's the best coach in the business and one of the best ever, but the field is catching up to him and the final two performances of the season were pretty much abysmal from a coaching and player standpoint.
