RTR is right, he is Jim Kelly's nephew not son.

I agree with others here as well, even though he had a ton of skill he is a true head case. There was questions about the way he acted BEFORE he went to Clemson, then he pulled his bit at Clemson, so it sounds like he is not going to learn.

I really doubt this is a commentary on how CNS feels about Cornwell or Bateman.

It's dangerous to just go on what you hear about a player's trouble (although we are all influenced by these rumors). But good news is, whatever happened, CNS would get to the bottom of it.

Do we even know why he visited? Maybe he called and requested a visit and/or we called him. No damage in exploring options by either side.
Good question - and I didn't read anywhere that he was invited by CNS or any member of the staff. It's a free country; if he just showed up and wanted to check things out, I don't think he would necessarily be escorted out of Ttown. OTOH, if this was an "official" invitation, then I am a little apprehensive about this. I have read things about him having problems in high school as well (haven't verified).

I heard he refused to take part in one of Dabo's prayer meetings, but that was from a USCe fan, so take it with a grain of salt.
People who know me personally and my biggest buds here know that I am a very spiritual person.
That being said, Dabo has no right to punish a player, or hold it against him, for refusing to participate in his prayer meeting. That should be the kid's choice. I think we call it, Freedom of Religion, or something like that.

Is there anything to that or is it a rumor? Things like that can damage a reputation.

I don't believe for one minute that this was the case. I'm pretty close to the Clemson program and have heard Dabo speak about his views on this, following the first reports accusing him of "making" players attend religious meetings. It's there for those who need it but definitely not pushed on players.

This may shock some of you, but occasionally people learn from their mistakes, particularly when those mistakes are made in their teens.
On the other hand, the best predictor of future performance is past performance, so the question remains, whatever the deal was in Auburn-with-a-Lake, has he learned his lesson? If the problem was the "Rivals says I'm a five star QB and my uncle is Jim Kelly, so I can do pretty much whatever I want without consequences," will a change of scenery fundamentally change who this young man is?
Terrell Owens, as talented as he was, never learned that lesson.

Whichever quarterback it may be that takes us to our next national championship, regardless the baggage from the past, will be A OK by me! I am sure it will be ok with our five time national championship coach too! ;)

I see no reasons other than unproven potential to take this kid, and lots of established behavior patterns as reasons not to.

It's not like Dabo is an old-school disciplinarian. There's no way dismissal of a five-star QB was a first, or even third, resort. This is like Bobby Bowden getting fed up to the point of booting a player.

There's got to be someone else out there.

I would rather Alabama play a QB who has character, but can't win them all than to have a person who is a CHARACTER and wins the NC, but will embarrass the program on down the road with that LACK of CHARACTER.

I like to win but not at the cost of having a …. at QB or any other position.

I see the wink face so I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt. QB is a very unique position as it relates to the face of the program. I want a talented QB with good character.

I hope each of our players grow as a man of character during his days at the Capstone. The most talented athleats have been given 2nd and 3rd chances ever since their pee-wee days, so it's gotta be hard to convince some of them to do the right thing all the time.

Honestly, based on how some of our former players have performed off the field without CNS around, I've all the confidence in the world that Saban will do what is best for the program and control whatever issues need be controlled, regardless of what some may think about it.

I'd suggest Saban has earned that respect.

To sum up our discussion to this point: it is a bit puzzling that UA would be interested at all. I tend to believe that he requested a visit and we accomodated as a public relations move. I cannot believe there is any more here than that.

I, too, have been close to the Clemson athletic program -- and while the FCA chapter is one of the largest in number and influence, I saw no "pressure" to attend. My own son went for a year or so, but dropped out as he found it rather immature and repetitive. It does provide a "group" where athletes can be safe and can deepen their faith. Dabo may have crossed a line...but I really doubt it.

We already have former players who played and won a national championship at Bama that have gone down the bad path since, embarrassing the program of late, but none of us are willingly going to give up those championship years back on account of it. While they are at Bama coach Saban will keep them straight or send them packing. When they are gone from Tuscaloosa....well....yeah we would all like to win with players of high character, but how they turn out afterwards is not of my concern. ;)

What exactly is Chad Kelly guilty of, other than having a bad attitude? He wasn't convicted of sexual battery (Mettenberger), he didn't steal a laptop (Newton), he wasn't in a bar fight (Johnny), nor did he get arrested for stealing, and wasn't accused of rape (Winston).

This is not to excuse his action, but to reiterate, he has a bad attitude. Even if he came to Alabama, perhaps he would be nothing more than another Duron Carter. Who knows? What we do know, is that if he doesn't behave himself, he'd never see the field at Alabama. If Nick Saban gives this guy a chance, Nick has earned the right to make those sort of decisions and furthermore, I don't see how anyone considers a young man with some issues with controlling emotions (but no legal issues that I'm aware of) a lost cause.

It looks like as Coach Saban is getting older, he's thinking about how much the families (sons) of football coaches sacrifice for their father's careers. I think this, as much as anything, may be behind his hiring of Lane Kiffin. We can only speculate about what emotions could be playing into this. Still, with ex-player's sons like Duron Carter and now Jim Kelly's nephew and Monte Kiffin's son, it's looking like there might be something more than coincidence.

That dovetails with what I said above. I think he sees some of these kids as a challenge. It will never be generally known how hard he tried with the Carter kid...
