Turnbull to forego senior season after being drafted in the second round

June 13, 2014

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
After being selected in the second round of the 2014 First-year MLB Draft, Spencer Turnbull has signed a professional contract with the Detroit Tigers on Friday morning.

Turnbull, who was the 63rd overall pick in this year's draft, will report to the Lakeland, Florida to start his professional career. He will then head to Norwich, Conn., to join the single-A affiliate in the New York-Penn League.

As a junior, Turnbull finished the 2014 season with a 5-7 record with a 2.22 ERA. He had 61 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .192 batting average, allowing just 61 hits in a team-high 93.1 innings pitched.

In his three-year career at Alabama, Turnbull took the mound in 45 games including 40 times as a starter. He has a 3.54 career ERA after posting a 5.60 ERA as a freshman and a 3.70 ERA in 2013. Turnbull appeared in 236.1 innings, recording 157 strikeouts while allowing opponents to hit .245 against him.

With Turnbull's selection as the 63rd pick in the 2014 MLB draft, he is the highest drafted crimson Tide player since 2006 when Wade LeBlanc was selected in the second round by the San Diego Padres with the 61st overall pick. Alabama has now had a player selected in each of the last 36 MLB drafts, dating back to 1979.

Speaking of LeBlanc what is he doing these days? I still remember ordering tickets in the first 10 minutes to the UNC Super Regional so I could see the LeBlanc/Miller and Hunter/Woodard pitching duels and boy it didn't disappoint!!

Can't wait to see Spencer get some innings, think he can move up pretty quick if he stays healthy!
