I'm not basing my starter prediction on my "wants" or an opinion of "he deserves it because he's been around", although I do believe he deserves a shot. I wrote that I think Blake will start game one because I don't think Coach Saban will start any player at the position of QB who hasn't even been through a spring practice to learn the system.
That's fair enough. In regards to your sentiments on the "Anti-Blake" camp, I think a lot of people here want to be in the Pro-Blake camp but it's hard based on what we've seen. I was in that camp until A-Day, when I saw the same Blake I've always seen.

Sip, if there is any bias toward Sims it's for a lack of seeing what some would like to see in the times he's played that make them think he's "the answer."

My bias is that he looks like a running back playing quarterback. No personal animosity, just my personal opinion.

Just going on what I've seen, but Coker just looks more like a quarterback than Sims, based on what I've seen.

The good news is CNS and CLK will see both of them take alot of snaps in August and they'll make the right decision.
Blake is definitely not the typical Bama QB from a physical stand point. My big question has always been, "If he's not going to make it at QB, then why not play him somewhere else".
I mean, in a way, if Blake doesn't play much or any this season we've wasted the talents of a pretty good all around athlete who may could have contributed at some other position.

Call me crazy cause I still think we're going to see both play this season a good bit this coming season, while I still think Coker will be the starter, I honestly think Sims will come in & play meaningful snaps besides mop up duty..Like at LSU that one year when Coach Saban was HC there..That was a pretty dang good offense & the chang of pace of playing two QB's kinda excites me with the set of skills Coker & Sims both bring to the offense..JMO

What's going to be funny is if Bateman becomes the starter..Cause he actually impressed me the most at the A-Day Game..He's got a pretty dang strong arm & is the classic drop back passer Coach Saban loves since he's been our HC at Bama..I know it won't happen & Bateman will be lost in the shuffle behind Coker & Sims..And especially with Cornwell coming in & with the recent commit of perhaps at the end of this coming high school season, the best dual threat QB in the 2015 season..Barnett is going to be good, really good, I truly hope he sticks with Bama, especially if our offense shifts towards a more fast paced type offense that some are predicting..

Absent some sort of disciplinary issue, I think CNS will start and play whomever he feels give us the best chance to beat the next opponent on the schedule.

I hate to have to admit this, I suppose, but I am far more concerned about the performance of the offensive line, collectively, than I am the quarterbacks. A really good offensive line can make an average qb more than sufficient. A subpar o-line (and yes, I will take the position that in some games/stretches last year our o-line did not get it done) can make it immaterial who is at qb.

But most importantly, I am ready for football conversation like this. I'm having fun even reading things I disagree with it. Thanks everyone. Two more months, two more months....

Let me ask you guys something. On the slant passes, who throw it better, and get the ball off on time? In the youtube video of Coker, he seem to be on target, but the receivers were dropping balls. Sims seem to throw it high, low, away several times during the A game. Post, fade and cross routes, Coker seems to be better at it than Sims.

All we heard out of spring practice was how good Blake was performing. His scrimmage numbers looked ok for the first two he played. I went to the A-day game expecting to see a vastly improved Blake Sims. Can part of his problem be choking when the lights come on and he has to perform in front of 100,000 fans?

I think this thread is hitting all around a rather pointed question - Why has Coach Saban not allowed Sims more playing time when games were in hand, and why was Sims limited to pretty much being a "handoff specialist" in his mop-up roles?

I think it had more to do with him having to face our defense when they could let it go, unlike a controlled scrimmage.

I think that question answers itself. A lot of people will say because CNS doesn't like to run the score up when a game is in hand, but I remember when AJ was backup it seemed he was allowed to throw a lot more, at least down the field, than Blake has.

Lot's of really good points being made here. Before Coker committed we had 5 or so QB's slated to compete for the job. My question is...would Coach Saban have extended a scholly to Coker if he felt like he had his guy already in the fold and knowing he was a 2-year deal at the most, and knowing it would lead to some defections (Del Rio, etc.)? Seems to me that's pretty strong writing on the wall.

I fail to see why you wouldn't let Blake throw just a little when he's taking over at the start of the fourth quarter with a five touchdown lead.

Yeah, a lot of folks don't seem to understand that when a QB under Saban is doing mop up duty that he really isn't getting a chance to show his stuff.
I remember Coach Saban getting upset when he put Derrick Henry in a game with about a minute to go, and Derrick took off on an 80 yard touchdown run.
He wasn't upset at Derrick, of course, just upset about scoring so late. he really doesn't like doing that once the game's in hand.

I guess yall don't remember the long and accurate pass that a young GMac threw in mop up duty against the Barn in 2008 for a touchdown? No, CNS wouldn't let a back up throw when the game is out of hand to make it 36-0.

Don't you go and get me all excited! You better not do that!! :biggrin2:

I really hope that OLine comes together. That and the secondary are really my only concern.

This was against the barn and Tubby after seven painful losses and that entire "thumb" drama. They deserved it and probably four or five more deep bombs late in the fourth.

Same with EL in the second half against Michigan State...

He did the same thing in the bowl game against Michigan State. I think he was exasperated about the other teams lack of tackling skills. If I remember correctly, it was Eddie Lacy running up the middle on a long score.

The bigger question mark that better be answered is the OL. But since we're specifically discussing the QB situation, after watching A-Day I had to re-evaluate my stance on Sims. I'm not counting the kid out but he took a big step back in my book after watching A-Day. Not that what's in my book matters. :biggrin2:
