Scientific study on why conservatives are conservative.

That conservatives respond much more rapidly to threatening and aversive stimuli (for instance, images of "a very large spider on the face of a frightened person, a dazed individual with a bloody face, and an open wound with maggots in it," as one of their papers put it).

In other words, the conservative ideology, and especially one of its major facets—centered on a strong military, tough law enforcement, resistance to immigration, widespread availability of guns—would seem well tailored for an underlying, threat-oriented biology.

Mother Jones is the left's counter to WND. If you insist on consuming one of them, you should bake the opposite half of your brain with the other.

For the record, I have enjoyed reading many articles in both. Libertarians enjoy being paranoid of both political wings.

it doesn't really matter who wrote it the word Scientist itself will make most conservatives turn away.

Interestingly enough you can experience the same phenomena with Mother Jones readers and scientists when the topic is GMO's, vaccines or just about any non alternative medical treatment

I understand why. The words science and scientist are whipped out like a pair of pistols when anyone with grant money thrown at them parrots the paid objective. Pseudo-science for money is as common as pseudo-religion for money. Both wings have found a convenient facade behind which to operate.

I hope no one takes me wrong on that, I'm not disparaging true science or true religion. I just choose not to be willfully ignorant of the abuses of both by political hacks.

I didn't read the whole study, but it seems really unlikely they were able to say that they learned WHY conservatives are conservatives. It sounds like they may have identified a common trait of those who consider themselves conservative. I mean, unless they were able to randomly assign the treatment of rapid response to stimuli to subjects, I don't think they could really say that is WHY they are conservative.

Another study conducted on liberals found different results. When liberals saw a large spider on a frightened person's face they said they only saw "an undocumented pet". A dazed and bloody individual was in need of a housing subsidy while a wound with maggots demonstrated the need to expand Obamacare.

Seeing as how the study itself consistently conflates conservatism with nativism ("resistance to immigration"), I have a hard time putting too much credence into their conclusion that, paraphrasing, "conservatives are conservative due to elevated fear".

Naw. If he was a conservative, he wouldn't be living in Seattle.

And he would have used a handgun rather than a blowtorch.

Then again, I don't think the dude is a liberal, either, because he would have fought for animals rights for the spider.
