It was apparently a mechanical failure. They had an aviation "expert" on one of the networks explaining that the pilot could not have dead-sticked it in and missed the family. There will probably be no charges or civil case, unless it can be shown the pilot neglected his pre-flight check in some way...

Terrible accident. Can't imagine the grief the family is feeling.
Praying God will hold them up through this.

Very tragic but couldn't the pilot have seen them on the beach beforehand - and elected to ditch in the water instead?

Not trying to second guess....just can't help but wonder why he didn't realize 'landing where people are' wouldn't have consequences.

Not really. There is just not much control at all over a light plane which has lost power. Even if he saw them at the last second, he really couldn't have aborted...

They apparently instruct you not to land in the water (unless it's a water craft) as it virtually always quickly flips and sinks - and you drown.

Poor guy. Just awful.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm sure the pilot thought he was making the right choice. Easy to second guess something like this.

Poor family - :(
