I was just watching the NFL Network. They have an hour special on each player who made it into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Starting at 7:00 p.m. Central Time, they showed a special on Ray Guy, punter at Tomson High in Georgia, University of Southern Mississippi, and the Oakland Raiders.
In the special he spent time with two brothers, former high school players, Southern Miss players, et al. Two former coaches from the Raiders were part of the program: Tom Flores and that awesome heavy weight, my favorite NFL coach and NFL Announcer.
I just thought it was awesome. During the program he shows and reads part of a letter that he received from Pat Dye when he was an assistant at Alabama. He also mentioned one thing that lost it for Bama was when Coach Bryant put his arm around Ray Guy's shoulder and said something to the effect that he would not get any grass stains on his uniform at Alabama. Instead, Guy wanted those grass stains and the family atmosphere that Southern Miss had. Also, I think Pat Dye said that Alabama would not be 4-2, which they were at that time, if they had him.
We lost a good 'un by us not being able to recruit him. Apparently, he could throw the ball farther than any Raider QB. He was an outstanding pitcher at Southern Miss. I think he was a 98 MPH pitcher. He played basketball, baseball, ran track and participated in field events. He was just an outstanding athlete. He was drafted by a MLB team, don't remember which one.
I always knew he was good, but not as good as he was. He could have been an outstanding QB. He was a QB in high school, helping to win the state championship in Georgia. Apparently his older brother was not a bad player. He was a good punter. I think he played at East Tennessee State Univ.
In an All-Star NFL game he asked his Raiders coach if he could try to hit the gondola in the Superdome. Coach first said NO, then called him back to the sidelines and said that he would give him one chance. He hit it on that one attempt!
If the NFL Network shows it again for those interested, you need to watch it. I did miss his induction speech and would like to see the whole speech.
He just seems to be a good down home kind of Guy!
