You have a lot of questions, I have one. What is your top 5?
couldn't care less about that until every team has played nearly half the season.

so, my response is along the lines of Justice Potter Stewarts comments on pornography: "I know it when I see it."

and right now, I'm not seeing a team that should qualify as second best in the nation.

I don't necessarily disagree with you on that, but the polls are coming out anyway and somebody has to be number 2. I'm not sure who else it would be, because I didn't see anybody that impressed me enough to take our spot with the possible exception of A&M. Even there, Carolina's defense was atrocious so not sure what to make of the Ags just yet.

Ok, I get it. You know who's not in the top 5, but you don't know who is in it.

But, one can infer based on your remarks that it doesn't include Alabama, Ohio State, and FSU (you took the time to protest my mentioning them). That's all well and good, but there is a top 5 and I think Alabama has more than earned their place within it. To say Alabama is in the bottom half of the top 10, is to say 5 teams are better. I was really curious as to what you consider those 5 teams to be.

It is extremely easy to be critical of other people's rankings when you do not have your own.

He could be right, or he could be wrong. We just don't know yet. But based on Saturdays game only, I'm standing by my preseason prediction that we lose 2-3 ball games this yr. I'm sorry, but I do not believe that this team can win an sec championship with the defense that was on the field Saturday afternoon. It will be interesting to see how much improvement there is on that side of the ball once DePriest comes back.
While I agree with you, we did only surrender 28 yards on the ground. And as Bebes used to always say, you've got to be able to run the ball, and stop the run. We did both Saturday. I'll be fine allowing teams to throw for 300+ on us each week as long as we keep them out of the end zone like we did Saturday. On their only offense TD, our DB was on the receiver like a second jersey. It was just a spectacularly thrown ball. I'll give teams field goals all day long. And we'll correct the special teams TD issue.

I can see some of what they are saying. Yeah, we didn't wow anybody with a 10 point win over a hapless team. But, who is "red hot" in their opinion? Who do they think they are fooling trying to prop up Florida State? They sure didn't let any of the facts from the Florida State-OSU game get in the way. And what was so special about LSU's 4 point come from behind win over Wisconsin? That they erased a 17 point deficit? Wow. Someone needs to tell them that Wisconsin having a 24-7 lead early in the game is not the same thing as them having a 24-7 lead late in the game.

I don't understand many of our fans. They pointed out how bad the aTm defense was against USCe and that aTm will never be an uppertier team in the SEC without a defense. After giving up essentially the same number of yards (not including many receiver drops), those exact same fans made all kinds of excuses about Bama. Bottom line we played terrible on defense and we don't deserve the #2 spot unless we improve. I know last year's team is entirely different, but that's 3 games in a row that our defense didn't play to Bama stds. We will lose 2 or 3 games if we don't improve.
Played terrible on defense? We gave up 1 defensive TD to a wide open, well prepared, spread team. And the coverage by our DB was almost perfect on that TD play. And we gave up a whopping 28 rushing yards. Was it a stellar Bama type defensive performance? No. Was it terrible? Also no.

IMO - one of the great tragedies of the 24 hour news cycle we have in America is it has minimized the talent that is out there at actually doing good reporting - the Walter Cronkite type.

ESPN and their plethora of networks has done the same to football analysis. You have to fill the time somehow, so instead of legitimately talented guys like Rece Davis, Blackledge, Fowler, Herbstriet, etc - you have a bunch of second rate guys who fill time. Their opinion is worthless, but because they're given a mouthpiece people think they're good at what they're doing.

I'm not one of the guys who thinks that every time someone doesn't anoint us Kings on their show that they suck - I just think the constant coverage has really watered down the talent level. Block everything else out - talking good OR bad about us - and pay attention to the guys who know what they're talking about. Your sanity will be much better for it, IMO.
Bingo. You nailed it. What he said....

The defense wasn't terrible. But it wasn't good...at all. I'm not sure using rushing yards as a barometer is the correct stat to use to determine if the defense was good or not. WVU only rushed the ball 24 times compared to 45 passing attempts. WVU is a pass heavy team and only uses the run to keep people honest. That's it. It is not their bread and butter. Giving up 8.1 yards per pass isn't something to write home about. The missed tackles in open space will get us beat. Sure, there were some completions where the wr and qb just made a great throw and catch. But there were waaaaay too many missed tackles, wrong reads and wrong reactions on our part. We've got some cleaning up to do before we get into SEC play on the defensive side of the ball.

I can't understand why everyone is upset about rankings that are literally total fiction anyway.

The Selection Committee hasn't even met yet.

Get back with me when we're 7-0 and they rank us 15th. Otherwise, there's nothing at all to be upset about in terms of rankings. (Plenty to be concerned about player-wise).

To me, the most overrated team I saw play on Saturday was UCLA. I know they won ten games last year, but they were really having a hard time moving the football at all. The only real points they saw were from their defense. But, what do I know compared to ESPN...

I will gladly trade winning 33-23 and be overrated than being an undergrad from 2000-2004 again. I know Earle enjoys this more than the days when "Ears" was the coach....:cool2:

I'm at home with a sick child today so we've been watching a lot of the reaction from this past weekend and it looks like a lot of the pundits have realized that more teams than Bama looked a bit "off" this weekend. I've watched several college football shows and not one has had the reaction Galloway and Kanell had. All have said "It's the first week, no need to overreact. A lot of top ranked teams have issues to workout."

I stopped watching those silly ESPN talk shows years ago. If I could just get Coach Bob Stoops to stop watching also, his life would be happier too.
