Unfortunately, I've seen a few of my female friends stay way too long with guys who abused them. I suspect most of us have. One of my best friends in the world stayed with a boyfriend for almost two years who occasionally abused her physically and constantly abused her verbally and emotionally. She almost married the guy. They were engaged and only a couple of months from the wedding. Nothing I, or any of her other friends, said or did made any difference. To this day she swears there was nothing out of the "ordinary" that caused her to walk out and never look back. She says she just woke up one day and decided she'd had enough. Thankfully, she's married to a great guy now and has three kids.

Can it be proven that Ray Rice is a Republican? Debbie Wasserman Schultz needs the analogy.

A few thoughts, which may or may not have anything to do with each other.

1. The punch was bad, but the way he dragged her out, and then just dropped her to have her head bounce off the floor was disgusting. It was clear to me he didnt care at all about her as a human being.

2. First he was suspended 2 games, then the league decided this type of behavior would be a 4 game suspension in the future. Then they see the video and basically ban him. They need to come up with a system of punishment and stick to it instead of changing things on the fly based on public reaction. Maybe the proper punishment is a certain amount of games or maybe it is a ban, but either way come up with a system and stick to it.

3. She slapped him in the face before they got on the elevator. ***hmmm i have watched another better video and im not sure she even slapped him. maybe lightly backhanded him but it didnt look at all forceful when i saw it again. the previous video was jerky and made it look a lot worse.

4. After all that they got married. I can't imagine marrying someone where things got that out of hand.

5. Ray Rice was known for his community outreach before this. He was considered one of the good guys. He is either a complete fake or he had one of the most horrific nights you can imagine.

6. NFL needs to clean up their act and it will be interesting what they do from here on out. This is what is known as a mud pit- everyone even slightly involved comes out dirty.
Those are some good points. Here are a couple of mine.
First the caveat - I never was a big RR fan even though I follow the Ravens. Also, what he did was inexcusable, period!

1. this is not your "normal" (from what we know) domestic violence incident. ie. the man comes home drunk or annoyed and punches his wife for little or no apparent reason etc
2. for all we know at this point, this is the 1st time RR struck her
3. we have no idea what "buttons she pushed" leading up to this
4. many males have been pushed to their limit without getting physical with their partner
5. she doesn't appear to be a weak little defenseless female
6. RR your normal male
7. alcohol was almost certainly involved
8. we shouldn't judge Janay for staying with him although I'm sure the money helps a lot. We have no idea of the dynamics of their total relationship

I'll just end with this although I'm sure some will jump all over me for it. From what we know now, from what we have seen, ranked from worst behavior to lesser bad behavior:
1. Vick
2. Rice
3. Josh Gordon suspended for entire season (indefinite suspension) for pot use (legal in two NFL cities)

Where ever there's BBQ, Bourbon & Football
I remember after the 9/11 attacks there were people who clamored that the video of the attacks shouldn't be shown anymore. I also remember when the American reporter's body was dragged down the street, there were those who believed the video and pictures shouldn't have been shown. Currently there are pictures (if you want to look) on the internet of some of the children that ISIS has beheaded and put their heads on the chest of their corpses. Yet you don't see them.

And here in this Ray Rice case, seeing the video compared to having an idea of what happened brought the seriousness of this type stuff to life and to proper priority. I'm not for showing gruesome things just for the sake of showing gruesome things. But what I am for is for things that are extremely serious in nature to be put in proper priority and perspective, that sometimes we need to see it for it to hit home to us and remind us how serious it is.

Not to get completely off topic but in many ways our society has become so desensitized to so many things. Like many on here asked yesterday. Why did it take seeing the video of him actually hitting her for all of a sudden this thing to be ramped up to the level it did? We all knew what happened without seeing it. He punched her out cold. But seeing the video reaches a part of us that to be honest may need to be reached more. And that's the depth of how serious somethings are and this is one of them. Sometimes it takes for people to actually see it to realize how serious domestic abuse is and has been for so long.

On another note. Has anyone noticed how passionate Adam Schefter has been when on the panel talking about this topic? I've seen him on three segments since this broke and each time he looks like he's in between about to cry and about to stand up and start pounding his fists. He must have some history with this topic.

She was knocked unconscious - that is very dangerous for a person, despite what the movies imply.

seems there was this other running back who used to beat his wife too. It did turn out too well for her or the guy who brought her sunglasses to her. It is only a matter of time before something similar happens to Mrs Rice.

The Onion: NFL Announces New Zero-Tolerance Policy On Videotaped Domestic Violence

“We hold our players to the highest standards both as professional athletes and as people, so any violence toward women that is recorded, authenticated, and then publicly distributed will be met with an automatic suspension and fine,” said Goodell, adding that the new, stricter guidelines reflect the league’s hard-line stance against any spousal abuse that is clearly and irrefutably captured on film.
It's kind of said that this article is a more accurate translation of NFL policy than a parody.

@SportsCenter THIS JUST IN: Spokesman for New Jersey state attorney general says it would have been illegal to release Ray Rice video to NFL.
So.....was the illegality in the release of ANY of the video? If so, somebody broke the law.

Or was it illegal for only the portion that showed the impact, but not the part that showed the skull-dragging aftermath? If so, how does one reconcile the apparent inconsistency?

Looks to me like somebody (are you listening, Roger Goodell or NJ Aty Gen?) is attempting to CYA, and not doing a very good job.

Not sure why this has pretty much been ignored by the national media, but this is from yesterday...

Justin George of the Baltimore Sun tweeted the paper tried to get the elevator video in February but was given the below information from New Jersey prosecutors.

So...if you get convicted of domestic battery but it's not on tape, other than missing a few games, it's all good?

Would it have been illegal for the casino to release it to the NFL?
This morning on Mike & Mike, Greeny said the last report he saw said any video from the casino floor belonged to the state but any other video from the casino belonged to the casino and/or the district attorney. That would go against what the NJ AG said today.
