Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Heisman?

if Bama gets to the playoffs he may have a better chance but the Heisman hype at this time of the year is always too early. Several of the guys that were considered hopefuls at the start of the season are not even in the running and its not even halfway in the season yet. If the team keeps doing what they need to do on the field than the Heisman talk may become more of a reality when it counts later on in the year.
Getting to the playoff may be enough to get him number 5 with an invite, but Cooper has two big names to make voters forget: Mariotta and Michael Crabtree. He has to hope Mariotta has a tumble and surpass Crabtree's numbers while the Lane Train keeps rolling.
Crabtree's 08 number's were

Here are Cooper's number through four games, and projecting those numbers through 12 games:

We don't need to worry about him winning the Heisman! We want him and his team to win something much more important: the NC!

That would put him 100 yards shy of breaking Nevada's Trevor Insley's 1999 record of 2,060 yards in a season. Add in the bowl game, and he could very well break it.

Then again, I don't expect him to continue to average 163 yards a game.

SIAP. Coop will most likely leave Bama with all career records, and possibly all season records.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

I think he has a chance but it's based on our overall performance as a team.
If he catches 7-9 passes per game against A@M, LSU, Ole Miss etc...and we WIN them all, he can be there.
Especially if he makes one game winning catch, or spectacular game winning catch and run.
Unfortunately, we, as Bama fans, don't want a game to be that close. At least I don't.
Point being--it's not a year where there's a ton of candidates, and if Amari shines, and we, as a team, shine as well, I think he can be there at the end.

I don't think the undefeated rule works with non-QBs... QBs get credit for wins and blame for losses - not so much with other positions.
I don't have the data in front of me, but I'd bet if you looked at recent years, you'd find a lot more RBs, WRs, etc., get Heisman votes on mediocre teams than QBs. I'm thinking Toby Gerhart's Stanford team only won 8 or 9 games. Larry Fitzgerald's Pitt team only won 8 games. One of McFadden's Arkansas teams won only 7 or 8. Those are all guys that finished 2nd. I doubt you'll find many QBs who finished even in the top 5 with 7-8 wins.

Baylor was 9-3 when Griffin won.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

Baylor was 9-3 when Griffin won.
And Tebow's 2008 Gators won 9. Tebow is the last QB who didn't end up with 10 wins to finish in the top 5 in the Heisman. Maybe Manziel last year - I didn't check 2013. But I do know that Andre Williams (RB) and Marqise Lee (WR) finished in the top 5 in 2012 and 2013, and they each won 7 games. I can't even think of a QB who has even been in the top 10 with only 7 wins.

I am fairly certain UF went 13-1 and won the NC in 2008.

When it comes to the Hessian, wide receivers are at a distinct disadvantage to QBs and RBs who are assured a significant number of touches of the ball each game. A WR hasn't won the trophy in over 20 years. In fact, the last several non-QB-or-RB winners (and there are only about 3 in the past 25 years) also doubled as kickoff and/or punt returnees, adding those guaranteed touches and the resulting razzle dazzle to their resumes. The system works against a straight-up WR. It's too easy for your stats tank for any number of reasons: QB has a bad day throwing or gets knocked around too much, you draw heavy double and triple coverage that allows other receivers to shine in your place, you simply aren't thrown to that many times in a game, etc.

I'll say this: if Coop keeps his current numbers up, he'll be a strong candidate. But the odds are he will have a quiet day or two, or our QB will have an off day, or we'll find ourselves in some situations where there isn't a need to pass much.
