Didn't he win it in 08? The year before Ingram? 07 was the Ohio St kid?

Actually, I think I am a year off and you are right.
'06 was troy smith, '07 was tebow, '08 was Bradford, '09 was Ingram. Insane to even think about that it is pushing nearly a decade since Tebow fever took over the media. Just crazy

The problem is that the Heisman is no longer about the best player. It conformed into as much of a beauty pageant as Miss America. Players like Amari aren't flashy enough, exciting enough, or "pretty enough" for the award in this day and age. The proof of that, and also why I believe Amari has no chance, is that in 2012 Marquise Lee went for over 1700 yards and 14 TDs. A massive year by anyone's standards, and he still lost out on it. No matter how good a receiver is, he just can't win the award as it is currently given.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

I don't think the undefeated rule works with non-QBs... QBs get credit for wins and blame for losses - not so much with other positions.
I don't have the data in front of me, but I'd bet if you looked at recent years, you'd find a lot more RBs, WRs, etc., get Heisman votes on mediocre teams than QBs. I'm thinking Toby Gerhart's Stanford team only won 8 or 9 games. Larry Fitzgerald's Pitt team only won 8 games. One of McFadden's Arkansas teams won only 7 or 8. Those are all guys that finished 2nd. I doubt you'll find many QBs who finished even in the top 5 with 7-8 wins.
Checked the results dating back to 2000. Here are the top 5. I did the team's record at the time of the vote in parenthesis for those dating back until 2007.

Thanks for that.

The QBs on that list: 82% won at least 10 games.
The non-QBs: 62% won at least 10 games.

- The three lowest win totals were non-QBs: Toby Gerhart (7), Andre Williams (6), and Marqise Lee (6)

- Toby Gerhart and Darren McFadden were the only top-two finishers with fewer than 9 wins.

Anyway... I just think that if we lose two games, Sims is undoubtedly out of competition. But, Cooper could still be in it.

*Disclaimer: Yes, I would rather win championships than Heismans. Just pointing out that I think winning games is more important to a QB's Heisman chances than a non-QB for the same reason people talk about Dan Marino never winning a Super Bowl, but never Barry Sanders.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

It's going to depend on what everyone else does more than what Cooper does. Let's say he keeps up this pace, at least somewhat, and ends up with 1800 yards, over a 100 catches, and 15 TDs. I think he'll get invited to New York at that point, but probably finish last among the candidates there. What he needs is for Oregon to lose a game or two and have Mariota stink in those games. Then he needs Gurley to have a bad game against Florida and Auburn and for Georgia to lose those games. Finally, we need to beat Texas A&M and their QB needs to have a bad game in the process while Cooper has his great game.

At that point, I think he's got a legit shot. But his production can't fall off at all and we can't lose. And, he probably needs Sims to not have anymore 400 yard games or he's going to get the Heisman instead.

Great points TideEngineer- I just see him having a couple of "off" games (Ole miss/Auburn/LSU??) in there and he's dependent on the QB.

Desmond Howard had the "pose moment" as well- Natl. TV (big deal back then)

Mel Kiper released an updated Big Board today. Coop lands at #3.

I think what he has going for him are the players in front of him. Everyone says that Marcus Mariota is the front runner and he is right now. But every year Oregon has one or two games where the offense looks terrible. It will eventually happen this year. Probably against Stanford or something.
Did I call that or did I call that? ;) Though a lot of the loss was not his fault, a terrible performance in the clutch is just as bad.
