Question: What are Amari's chances of winning the Heisman?

I want to preface this thread by saying that Bama's chances of winning the national championship are a lot more important. And I am sure that Amari would agree with that.

But what do you think are Amari's chances of winning the Heisman? I think really the biggest roadblock is that no pure wide receiver has ever won before. You had players like Woodson who also played defense and Howard who also returned kicks. Amari doesn't return kicks or play defense.

I think what he has going for him are the players in front of him. Everyone says that Marcus Mariota is the front runner and he is right now. But every year Oregon has one or two games where the offense looks terrible. It will eventually happen this year. Probably against Stanford or something.

And then there is Winston. First off, even on the field, he hasn't been the same player as last year. And the second is the character issue. I will say it right now. We haven't of the last off the field issue for Winston this season.

Based on recent history (last two winners) I'd say his chances are zero. He needs to be arrested, or accused of something really bad. Maybe hang out in some casino's with wads of cash. He's just too clean to win it.

If he played for USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, or Ohio State, he'd have a shot. But, he's from Alabama so he won't get any serious consideration.

Zero.

If his numbers are great as a pure wide receiver then that makes Blake Sims a candidate as well.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

IF he even remotely comes close to producing at the same rate he is now I think he has a STRONG chance at the Heisman. We face an unreal schedule against ranked SecW teams and if Coop keeps putting on MVP 'you just can't stop him' performances to get us to 12-0 it will be just like Ingram's journey.

Just for the 12 Reg season games he's on pace for 1,950 yrds and 15 TD's....in the SEC...that's BIGTIME.

Normally, I'd say next to nothing, as it's become essentially an award for the best QB or RB on the winningest team.

That said, it's early, but if he continues to put numbers up like he has thus far AND none of the other top teams have a standout player at QB, he has a chance.

I think some of y'all are short selling his chances. IF, and a I mean IF , he continues to have 100 plus yards with TDs in every game for the remainder of the season, IMO he will be invited to New York. he is currently the FBS leader with 6 straight 100+ games. I don't see that streak ending anytime soon. I know its been awhile since a WR has won the Heisman, but this Amari Cooper and Alabama we are talking about folks. ;)

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

I disagree. The talking heads are discounting BS by pointing to Cooper's talent. This may be one of the very few instances in which the WR could win it without having to face significant competition from the QB. Blake is going to be one of the best stories in college football if he keeps this up, but I don't think the talking heads will ever recognize him in that way.
This is my rationale as well. Taking nothing away from Blake because he's for sure proved he's QB1 but Cooper is on a level that he would make any Top QB look better than the other way around. No QB is going to 'make Cooper look good'. He is running perfect routes, catching everything, and making CHUNKS of YAC. This is one exception of a QB not taking votes from his own WR.

One thing of note...this morning on Mike and Mike, Cris Carter said Coop is the best WR since Randy Moss....From Carter that's HIGH praise.

If Cooper finishes with close to 2k yards and 15 TDs he will get an invitation, but to win it he will need other players and teams to lose while Alabama goes undefeated. If Oregon is undefeated at the end of the conference championship game, Mariota will probably get the nod no matter what Cooper does.

Re: What are Amari's chances of wining the Hesiman?

I'll go with about 2% - about 1/50.

The only way he could win is if Oregon loses at least two, and Mariota's play is not impressive in the losses, and Todd Gurley falls off in SEC play. My money would actually be on Gurley right now.

I do like the fact that the top two candidates this year are players with integrity - Mariota and Gurley. I would be fine if either of them win.

Mariota was a clear favorite for the first half of last season until he met real completion and wilted away. mind you that was in the Pac 12.

its a long season and we have seen Heisman candidates come and go. RG 3 was a prime example of an unknown player as well as Manziel who came out of nowhere. let see who emerges this year. Amari is for real and the nation has pretty much acknowledged his greatness. Like I said, If he continues to do his thing, he is in a class all by himself.

Gurley's stats pale in comparison with Abdullah's right now. If I were voting for a RB, Abdullah would get my vote at this pont in the season.

Winston will not go to NYC this year no matter if his stats are similar to last year, his suspension this past Saturday sealed his fate. Bank on it. If for some reason, he does go to NYC, I have literally lost all the respect in the world for the Heisman voters not sticking to the mission statement, as they haven't done that 3 of the last 4 years.

I'm fairly certain he'll be there.

Of course, I'm fairly certain it will simply be because he won it last year and is there "representing" the past Heisman winners and "supporting" the players actually invited to the ceremony with a chance to take it home.

Exactly! This is like Fred Biletnikoff and Steve Tensi. Almost every CFB fan knows of Biletnikoff. Almost no CFB fans know that Tensi was the one throwing him the ball at F$U.

Like them, Cooper will be remembered long after Sims is forgotten.
