at our previous church, we had two large families who had escaped the brutality of the taylor regime. it sounded horrific
I'm afraid that the terrible tearing of the social fabric that occurred during the civil wars has played a big part in the disaster. They just don't trust anyone...

it is an understandable sentiment, based on what i heard
Charles Taylor was more brutal, but IMO Samuel Doe - along with Rafael Trujillo - has always been the classic example of the duplicitous nature of CIA support. Doe's fall was a defining event in my political outlook as it was through his fall that I first grasped how thoroughly untrustworthy America could be viewed in the court of foreign opinion, especially by third-world nations. It was from this awakening that I began to lean toward a more hands off (or isolationist, if you prefer) policy. I'm not dogmatic about that stance, but it remains my default.

Taylor supported the RUF in Sierra Leone. Sick, sick people.

Liberian born, US professor tells Liberians that US manufactured Ebola.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...he-u-s-manufactured-ebola-outbreak/?tid=sm_fb

Yeah, this will help our folks there.

And now, in what may plant further seeds of mistrust and suspicion, a major Liberian newspaper, the Daily Observer, has published an article by a Liberian-born faculty member of a U.S. university implying the epidemic is the result of bioterrorism experiments conducted by the United States Department of Defense, among others.

And while some commenting on the article were critical, the number who praised it was telling. “They are using” Ebola, wrote one, “for culling the world population mainly Africa for the…purpose of gaining control of the Africans resources criminally.”

I think the death rate would not be as high here due to better living conditions and health care in general, but it could still be pretty bad.

How many synonyms are there for "insane?"
I read the article and the article linked in the article.
Not saying the guy is wrong, but his evidence is skimpy. I'm sure Detrick & CDC have been doing research on how best to treat/limit the sprwad of Ebola.
The development of the virus seems far-fetched.
Plus, I seriously doubt any scientist of any nation would willingly and deliberately infect a human subject, and then keep that secret.

He does seem to be dwelling a bit in another realm. I'm sure he believes in Bigfoot. One problem is that he's coming out of a culture which still believes, particularly in rural areas, in supernatural avenues of infection and cure. Hell, there are very similar belief systems which exist till today in NOLA, although greatly reduced by the population decimation by Katrina. It's just hard to wage a scientific war against a fearsome disease and against a culture at the same time. Of course, we have sects here in the US, with no African origin at all, who only believe in divine intervention for cure, and, in order to prove it, will pray over their dying children, who could be easily cured by modern medicine. Not so far apart, in the end...

Maybe I just draw a distinction between faking a vaccination program or experimenting with non-lethal drugs effects on combatants and deliberately infecting innocent bystanders with usually lethal infectious disease.
I am not spring-loaded to the "defend the schmucks in the Federal government" position, but I seriously doubt any American government official would deliberately and with malice aforethought infect African civilians with a disease which will probably be lethal.

And, my final hedge. I have enormous doubts that a scientist who caught wind of such a program would sit tight and not disclose knowledge of such a program, especially if her/his involvement was post-facto and tangential. Man, they'd be on Fox/MSNBC and have a hefty book deal so fast it would make the CIA's head spin. Members of the Federal government may be morally questionable enough to try such a nightmare, but they are rarely competent enough to keep this level of evil secret.

Of course, said scientist may find himself in deadly car crash or robbery that went wrong. Similarly to Vince Foster who allegedly shot himself in the back of the head.
