Anyone know who this individual is? I ask because I have seen this same figure with Nick for years and wonder how it comes to be that one person is hired to be like his right hand security guard. Kind of like the individual trooper that was with Bobby Bowden for many years. It has to be pretty cool to go with Nick to games and accompany him through out his time in public, but also a big responsibility.

"Our coach doesn't need protection," Plati wrote. "He's accompanied by a 1,300-pound buffalo."

more like.... "Our coach doesn't need protection. We're the worst team in the PAC12 and haven't won a meaningful game in years."

Interesting piece.

I don't recall his name, but, he is an Alabama State Trooper. He and another trooper are listed with the administrators in the game day programs.

His name is Lt. Jessie Peoples, I have known him for a long time. He is a good dude and a sharp Trooper. Those Trooper escorts do a lot more than just stand around with the coaches.

If you get the time I'd like to hear more detail on what the troopers job entails.

I could be wrong but I think Coach Bryant was the first coach to have a State Trooper escort. Then other schools started getting escorts for their coaches.

I'm not sure if I should be awestruck at the display of fan-hood to even think of this or a little creeped out...

:biggrin2:

Little of both, I guess.

Re: Policeman with Saban pic

i didn't realize that coach bryant and coach sanderson used the same haberdasher

O.K., you asked for it - Bear's tailor

Baldone soon realized that the coach had absolutely no fashion sense and that he was prone to mixing checked pants with a plaid coat. So he started helping Bryant coordinate his wardrobe.

"I started numbering his clothes," Baldone says. "Like '8' coat, '8' pants, and '8' tie. I said, 'All you've got to do when you go in the closet is reach in there and match the numbers and you'll look good.'"

Re: Policeman with Saban pic

I immediately thought of Billy Varner. For those too young to remember, here's a link to our past : The last ride of Bear and Billy

Thirty years after his last season, Bryant's humanity lives only in his family and a few aging friends, in former employees such as Knowles, in 72-year-old assistant coach-turned-athletic director Mal Moore, and, perhaps most of all, in Billy Varner. Paul W. Bryant is dying for the second time, and one day, in the not-so-distant future, only The Bear will remain.
Dang.

Does the writer of the article know that Mal died last year?
