Playing against #1 in BDS

Unless I missed some, a quick review of the media guide shows that our all-time record against teams ranked #1 is 6-4. (That's kind of mind-boggling, since 0-10 would be justified, in theory).

However, we are 0-2 in BDS (2003 Oklahoma, 13-20; 2011 LSU, 6-9). It's hard to find something we haven't done, but if UT-Martin doesn't spoil the set up, we can make history next week.

OK - here's the list:

(Season, not calendar year)

1957 Auburn (B'ham).........................................................0-40
1971 Orange Bowl Nebraska...............................................6-38
1977 at Southern California.............................................. 21-20
1978 Sugar Bowl Penn State..............................................14-7
1992 Sugar Bowl Miami ....................................................34-13
2003 Oklahoma ................................................................13-20
2009 SEC Championship Florida ........................................32-13
2011 LSU ...................................................................... 6-9
BCS Bowl LSU .........................................................................21-0
2012 BCS Bowl Notre Dame .............................................................42-14

Note there is a media guide discrepancy - in one place, it says Miami was #1 in 1989 Sugar Bowl (we lost, 25-33), they were actually #2.

Very interesting stats. We actually have a winning record against #1 ranked teams. If I'm reading this correctly, we were visitors 9 out of the 11 times with a 67% winning percentage on the #1 ranked teams' own turf.

BTW...that 2011 LSU game still haunts me. So many missed opportunities!

Unless I missed some, a quick review of the media guide shows that our all-time record against teams ranked #1 is 6-5. (That's kind of mind-boggling, since 0-11 would be justified, in theory).

Somehow I think the Dawgs will manage to keep their undefeated record alive against UT Martin :)

In 2012 MSU was 7-0 and ranked #13 when they came into BDS. Didn't go so well for them that day neither.

Yep. I had forgotten about that one. Didn't they have some hashtag movement prior to that game? #WEBELIEVE or some other such nonsense?

Yes, back then..they had an easy schedule and that is the only reason they were undefeated. They spouted off that We Believe stuff.

This time around...they can legitimately state that they are a good team coming into BDS.

The other games weren't all road games. A number of them were bowl games, such as Penn State in the 1979 Sugar Bowl. One road win over #1 that comes to mind was 21-20 over Southern Cal in 1977.

While they were not ranked #1 at the time, we have faced an undefeated Mississippi State in Bryant-Denny not that long ago - 1999. It didn't go so well for them that day.
Check your stats.

Mississippi State was undefeated and ranked No. 10 when they faced Alabama in 2012. I was there.

I for one look as Legion Field as BDS North back in the day. Legion Field was know as Football Capital of the South for one reason. Alabama football. For those of us who attended games at Legion Field when the upper deck got to rocking it was as loud and crazy as any other stadium (except for UT).

I know there is quote from John Hannah when he was drafted by the Boston Patriots. A reporter asked him what do thinks it going to fell like playing in front of 60k fan in at Foxboro Field (I think that was the name of their stadium). John was a very humble guy and responded. I really know know, but I know what its like to play in front of 72,000 at Legion Field. The article goes onto say that the reporter was at loss. John said I guess they dont take football as serious as we do in the south.

At first I was surprised that we have only played the #1 ranked team 10 times, but then, when you have been #1 as much Alabama, it lowers the chances of playing against #1.
