The NCAA has imposed sanctions on Weber State after it found that a math instructor had improperly helped Wildcats football players with their course work, quizzes and tests.

The NCAA put Weber State on probation for three years, reduced scholarships for the football program and imposed at least $5,000 in fines for violating ethical conduct rules. The penalties do not include a postseason ban.

The NCAA says the math instructor completed quizzes and tests for five players, and gave others hints about formulas and help with quiz and test answers
So, with this in mind, what is to be done with North Carolina?

NC will get a $10,000 fine and one year bowl probation IF the ACC can make their quota of bowl teams. If not, then they must ride a bus to the bowl game and not fly there.

Now this is typical NCAA logic: A school cooperates and self reports so let's take away nine scholarships and give them probation for three years. How the heck does that make sense? If the school doesn't report it, probably no one ever finds out.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be consequences for the violation. However, if you want universities to help you in insuring that they are following the rules, let punishment be appropriate to the crime.

As we have learn from past experiences with the NCAA: We cooperated and got shafted. Others lawyered up, turned the whole thing into a "due process" three ring circus and walked away virtually scot free..

Instructor assisted cheating is one thing. UNC had a "shadow curriculum" set up for 18 years which was aided and abetted by administration inside and outside of athletics. If one wanted to define "lack of institutional control", I don't believe they could find a better example.

If this is what they do at Weber State, then the NCAA should "board up" the athletic facilities in Chapel Hill.

But it will not.

Basketball season has begun, football has ceased to exist in Tar Heel country. Even if the NCAA gives them a death sentence, the fans wouldn't know it until about the end of next September or later. :)
The basketball team is very involved in that academic fraud case. I believe every athletic program was.

Well, it is obvious they gained a competitive edge.

Actually, UNC demonstrated a great deal of institutional control, and they should get hammered for it!!

Brilliant logic by the NCAA.

Reduce scholarships for an academic scandal (yes, let's make the team dumber), instead of making the school fire the professor (maybe the school already has).

The five players should be ineligible, and until they can pass calculus, ineligible to play anywhere else.

Didn't realize a team became dumber because it couldn't have as many players on scholarship.
