Freshman punters aren't usually celebrities, much less less recognized, on college campuses.

This campus hasn't seen a freshman punter like JK Scott, though.

Quickly becoming one of the nation's best punters - and one of Alabama's most valuable players - Scott has picked up a sliver of fame for the work he's done in Year 1.

"It's been great, the Alabama fans are great," Scott said after Alabama's SEC Championship victory in his first interview since enrolling at UA. "Every time I see one in public and they recognize me they'll say 'good job.' There's been good feedback.

"I think it has been a good year."

That it has.

Scott, a Denver native, ranks third nationally in punting average (47 yards per punt). Only one other freshman ranks among the top 50. Of his 48 punts, only 10 were returned for a total of 73 yards. It's just one year, but the early returns have him on pace to dominate the school's punting records.

Of his 48 kicks, 18 have traveled at least 50 yards. Twenty-six have been pinned inside the 20 yard line, almost doubling the output of a productive Cody Mandell in 2013.

JK has been one of my favorites to watch. For a freshman, he seems incredibly poised. The bad snap in the SECCG could have been disastrous, but he kept his cool and made the kick.

And he's just an incredible kicker.

That play - which was an amazing play for a punter - was unfortunately the punt that dropped him from second to third in the nation in punting average and dropped Bama from first to second in the nation in Net Punting. :)

Had that punt been only 5 yards longer, Bama would be first in Net Punting and he would be second in punting average.

Had it been a good snap and had he uncorked a 67 yarder on that one then he would be first, also, in punting average.

Couple more games to go, though. I think he can get there. :)

He's literally a game-changer, regularly flipping field position. Never seen anything like him as a freshman (and few like him in CFB, period).

JK Scott has won some games for us this year. The effect a great punter can have on a team is sometimes invisible. He changes how we play defense and has taken the punt return game away from teams. The opponents have to earn their points going the length of the field against one of the best defensive minds in the game. I've always made a huge point about how the game is a continuum where all phases feed on each other. Scott's influence on the defensive and offensive starting position has paid dividends.

btw, he's done well in spot kickoff duty too. Griffith is no slouch on kickoffs either. Similarly, the kickoffs have been such that our coverage teams have a great shot at minimizing returns. I expect Griffith to come back strong as a placekicker once he gets healthy and our specialists being a real asset for the next 2-3 seasons. We're going to be nasty when Scott can pin teams, defense gets the 3 and out, the offense starts near midfield, and a healthy Griffith assures a minimum of 3 points with about 20-25 yards of offensive production.

This kid is special. He definitely helped us win the game against MSU. They had horrible field position the whole game.

He's one of my favorite things about this team. Oh, you managed to stop Blake, Amari and TJ? Jake's gonna make sure you have to go 70+ yards for a TD.

In two more years J.K. will be having a press conference in T-town explaining his intention on going pro early.
Early in the season, I joked about that with Mrs. Basket Case. I mean, he's good, but who ever heard of a punter going pro early?

Now, it's no joke. I think he really might be the first.

A lot of people (myself a few years back) were critical of how Alabama was dealing with special teams. The truth is, you can only do so much, you go with who looks best and in this case they clearly nailed it. He went out and got the best punter available, and it darn sure makes a difference.
