Re: Rick Neuheisal on Oregon and the Playoff scenario
Sure. But more importantly, where are the other 48 now, and where will they be Jan. 1st? Sitting at home (except for the other 3).
The issue is physicality at the point of attack. Oregon's DL is 48th in rushing D. In a league that doesn't emphasize the run. In fact, Oregon is the league's rushing leader at #20. The best rushing team Oregon's D had to play against was UCLA at #37. And it goes downhill from there.
So I think it's safe to say that Oregon's rushing D isn't that good when viewed on a national scale.
Whereas Alabama played against the #11, 18, 26, 27 and 41 rushing offenses, and STILL came out #2 statistically. Numbers 11 and 18 include Nick Marshall and Dak Prescott at QB. Mariotta's style, though admittedly not his proficiency. Still, both lost. #26 was Arkansas, with the biggest OL in football. # 27 was LSU.
There is simply no comparison here.
If the Ducks win the NC, they win it in a shootout. Which is exactly what they're built to do. They win against good teams in basketball scores. Please don't misunderstand: It's a valid philosophy, though I don't think it's the best one. And I actually admire Oregon's philosophical consistency. The Ducks know what they are, and don't try to be anything else.
My point is not that Oregon can't play. My point is that you can't have it both ways. You can't at the same time trumpet a physical D
and, when you run into a good team, not only to play, but to be built to win a 45-44 type game. Now you're getting inconsistent with your philosophical base.
