Alabama to start zeroing in on game plan for Ohio State-sds

While just getting back up to speed has been the focus of the University of Alabama football team the past three days, senior right tackle Austin Shepherd has been pleasantly surprised with everyone’s approach so far. “A lot better than I thought it would be,” he said Thursday evening, two weeks before Alabama will play in a national playoff semifinal (Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).
“The first day was really good. We kinda just jumped right back into it like we haven’t missed a beat.”
After winning the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 6, players were off until Tuesday. In addition to taking finals, most used the time to rest up and maybe make a quick trip home.
Whereas the past three days have been about fundamentals, Alabama will start implementing the game plan for Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl on Friday.
“They’ve been pretty good,” sophomore defensive end Jonathan Allen said. “We’ve had camp-style practices so we’ve just been getting back to basics and focusing on techniques. We feel like those are very important for us as a defense to be successful.”
So far reserve offensive lineman Grant Hill has been the only player to miss workouts due to the flu. Alabama will practice through the weekend and after Monday’s workout will break for the holidays.
Both teams are due to arrive in New Orleans on Dec. 26.
“I’ve watched a little bit (of film),” junior cornerback Cyrus Jones said. “They’ve got athletes all over the field, good quarterback, good running backs, too. Just like the teams we play in our league, just got to account for everything they like to do and be prepared to try and stop it the best you can.”
However, Alabama obviously doesn’t have much to go on regarding Cardale Jones, the third-string quarterback who was mostly known for a tweet about how pointless classes were before leading the Buckeyes to a big win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship.
“I think he’s very similar to JT (Barrett) and Braxton (Miller),” Jones said. “They all can do the same things, they can run it and throw it. Definitely got to respect a quarterback who’s able to make plays with his legs.”
