What could've been: Blake Sims

I'm bored, reading through threads about drafts, and I wondered: 'what if Sims would have had 2-3 years to start? Where would he be in this draft?' Please understand, I'm not comparing him to Mariotta or Winston. In fact, that's the last Im mentioning them in this thread. This is about Sims.

I'll be surprised if Sims get drafted, but I can see him going to camp somewhere as a FA. His body of work is just too little. But as I watch him play, he reminds me of s guy that maybe no one ever thinks about: Steve McNair

Steve was one of my favorites. Steve could make throws. Steve could run with the ball...and Steve wasn't easy to tackle. Dude was country-strong. He wasn't speedy-flashy, but he was shifty and just knew how to run. Steve made some really bad decisions at times...gosh, I would get frustrated with him. Then it was as if a switch flipped, and he'd say 'guys, just hang with me here and I'll make it right.' And then he'd go out and make it right. He'd make the throws, he'd tuck it and run when he had to, his supporting cast would follow his lead and make plays....He had, among others, Eddie George at RB, and a very deceiving Derek Mason at WR.

If Blake had more starting experience, I don't know that he'd be a 1st rounder....I don't know that he wouldn't. I know he locks on to his first read A LOT (I would too!), sometimes struggles with progressions (not nearly as much as he did); maybe those things improve with more starts. I know CLK has done wonders with him. I don't know that he's an NFL starter, but then again, the Big 4 are set to retire in the next 2-4 years, and I'm only seeing 2 or 3 (elites left after that).

Just hoping he gets a shot

I had not thought about McNair, but he really reminds me of Donovan McNabb. Either way, if he plays like those guys, he may be able to hang around the league for a couple of years and collect a few checks to set himself up in life. I wish him nothing but the best.

I wish we had him another year.

I think it was huge for him to get the invite to the Senior bowl. I hope he is able to show the scouts some more of his talent. He deserves a shot.

Idk if he could have done as well under Mac or Nuss. 3 years under CLK and he could have broken the school records for passing.

I loved Steve McNair also but I don't think Blake really compares to him. Steve was a bigger guy than Blake, taller and stronger. I love Blake but I don't think he has the skill set required to play QB in the NFL. I would love for him to prove me wrong but I just don't see it. That doesn't take anything away from what he has done at Bama. He is a very good college QB..

It's no coincidence that Blake Sims has exploded under LK's tutelage. He's also throwing to the greatest statistical wide receiver in Alabama history, the best wide receiver in college football the last two years, when he's healthy. Don't confuse the two. Blake Sims has made me a believer in him and his abilities, but let's not get carried away. Steve McNair single handedly made Alcorn State competitive AGAINST DIVISION ONE OPPONENTS. Do you not remember his stat lines against similar colleges? Blake Sims is playing at near 100% of his capability as an athlete, I don't think his ceiling gets much higher. That's not a knock on him, as his sweat has more athletic ability than most on this board. He's not ideal height, arm strength is on the bottom end of average for the NFL, and he's not shifty or quick enough to swap to corner or wideout, or to even be a return specialist.

I do honestly hope he proves me wrong at the next level just like he proved me wrong this year.

Everyone is putting almost all the praise on LK, most that would be right, I guess. Blake though, put in work while everyone else played during the spring break and summer. Blake shocked us all me included. Even though I thought he'd be good, I didn't think he'd be this good. I still think that he should have been first team SEC.

He's gotten better as the season has gone. He did lock on to Amari but Amari was always open. Why not throw it to him. However, at the end he was hitting everyone. That makes him even more dangerous. Like someone said, I wish he had 2-3 more years.

I wish we had him another year for a lot of reasons, only one of which is his play on the field.

At least as important is his leadership, but most important is his inspiration. Blake Sims willed himself to be where he is. He did everything he could, and went about it in exactly the right way, and is now reaping huge rewards from his hard work.

Every team needs that kind of example quietly staring it in the face, and I think we'll miss that the most.

The skill sets are different, but the Sims / Kiffin story line still reminds me of Gary Hollingsworth and his partnership with Homer Smith.

I am happy with the production from AJ. the QB I thought might be better than McCarron had 2 'm's in his last name. Goes to show you what I know. I am thrilled with Blake, better than I thought. His story is a lot like DJ Shockley of Georgia. Waiting patiently behind a long time starter. Like Shockley, he didn't transfer. But Blake has shown more than DJ, and DJ got a shot with the Falcons, so I think Blake will get a chance with an NFL team.

I have a great deal of admiration for Blake Sims and the character he has shown by staying in the program for the full term in spite of being shuffled from position to position. His performance this year was beyond belief. He is the poster boy for team player. In spite of all of this imagine what he might could have accomplished in a program like Clemson or Virginia Tech, and other programs who could have used and put his talents to use earlier in his career. I wish him the best in his future in or out of football.

Didn't Blake work with a QB guru during that time? Who was that QB guru?
