Tough kid, and, as a man who suffers with back spasms, I can sympathize with him - but my sympathy isn't going to help him kick FGs.

Oh my, that's terrible news. Will they affect him if/when he lays off football, i.e. is he going to be ok long-term?
There's no good way of predicting which ones will recur and how severe they're going to be. They're much more common in the feet and legs. However, I guess if anyone were going to get it in the back, it would be a kicker...

If its a pars fracture, he may well be OK long term. I was a competitive rower at the international level from 1989 to 1994. I came out of retirement in 2007 and suffered a pars fracture in February 2008 when I started training hard again (I was almost 40 but thought I could still get after it like I did when I was in my early 20's). After four months of physio and no training I was able to get back to training and raced at Master's Worlds in 2010. Doing lots of core training is the key- it stabilizes the joint.

It's extremely painful when the muscles 'guard' (pull) to protect the joint. I don't know how he has even been able to kick at all. My hat's off to him that he is toughing this out.

I'm recovering from a herniated disk in my back. My two lower disks got messed up. I just had a cortisone shot in between my left pinky toe and the to next to it. I had numbness going down my left toes. On top of that a couple of weeks earlier I had a lower spine epidural. My soreness in my back started in late July. I'm probably going to need another shot in the nerve in my foot next week.

I have been trying to get over a back injury for 6 months. Initially the doc thought it was a bulging disk. Then low and behold I have 2 fractures near the base of my spine. I havent played soccer in 6 months. I cant imagine playing a D1 sport with it. There are days I feel great, I halfway roll out of bed and my entire back locks up. The stuff is miserable.

So it definitely explains a lot with the kid.

One pertinent part is referring to it as an "old nemesis" so it's something he has been dealing with, and coping with apparently. I guess to add to the stories, I did something several years ago to my upper back and at first I thought nothing of it, just thought it would get better. But, instead it proved to be something that was easily aggravated. So, for instance after one period of feeling fine, it started bothering me, and I naively thought it was just something I could tough out, and muscle through. Oh no you can't...

The end result was being stuck in bed like a turtle on his back, muscle spasms, and pain that had spread to my arm. But, if it's at all like it is with me, if I don't do anything to irritate it, it's possible for it to get better after a couple weeks of not irritating it, and then as long as I'm careful it might be not be bad until I do the wrong thing, in which case it will just get worse and worse unless I exercise caution. I know it's a different scenario, but I imagine there's some similarities there, at least in terms of the spasms.

A lot of us have experienced back spasms. Even if they inject muscle relaxants, the underlying injury will still be there. And, as he said, he's still lacking practice and the rhythms which come from that...

i dealt with this in the past and it can be pure misery. i eventually had to have surgery (14 years ago this spring) after 2-3 years of other treatments but it fixed the problem.

If it's a pars fracture, i think it would be hard to say what the long term prognosis is. Depends on whether it is 'terminal' and also whether it is bilateral or on one side. Mine is terminal (complete separation) and bilateral (both sides) which, from what i have read about it, is more typical with rowers, gymnasts and offensive lineman but his might be one on side only which is more common with pitchers and probably kickers I would think.

I was advised to live with the pain unless it fundamentally detracted from day to day quality of life. If the pain is really bad, the solution is spinal fusion surgery but the specialist that I saw for my injury said that spinal fusion has a 12 month recovery and only a 50% success rate and when it is unsuccessful, it can often make the pain worse. I've been really lucky in that regular core strength training and retiring again from competitive rowing has allowed me to be mostly pain free except a dull ache when I sit for too long sometimes. When i was rowing, I had pain almost all the time and I was popping aleve like candy.

I feel badly for those of you with herniated discs; i had that once years ago and the pain and the tingling down the leg is much sharper and shocking than the pain of pulled/guarding muscles that I had with the pars fracture.

Adam Griffith is a tough, tough young man to try to push through this and I hope he recovers and has a long, successful career.
