Saban and Smart are supposedly defensive gurus, so even if the 4* and 5* guys haven't lived up to their billing on paper why does this team seem to make almost every QB look unbelievably good?

Heck, we had a WR who had never thrown a collegiate pass before throw a TD strike on us tonight.

There are fundamental issues with the defense. I think the discussion as to whether or not the game has 'passed Saban by' (defensively) remains to be answered at this point.
I won't lie. I've thought this exact same thing a time or two. Hopefully, it hasn't.

Wow, you are in a bad mood.....we can talk about Global Warming, if you like ;)

It's all good -- the game hasn't passed him by -- but, he's hard headed -- and he's going to have to consider (to me):

1. Using his time outs more effectively
2. Develop more depth at LB
3. Let Kirby blitz more -- if we are going to get beat consistently - at least we can get some back by sacking the QB and creating turnovers.

no doubt fundamental issues with the scheme IMO.. I wonder why we kept blitzing so much because we rarely got there and it created huge holes in the defense. It did help oncee at the end and gave us a chance but the blitz hasnt got there all year. I keep waiting for adjustments but keep seeing the exact same issues. I dont want to hear that the we didnt execute excuse anymore.

Can't believe I'm about to say this, but even though CNS sees himself as a defensive back specialists and actually coaches this part of the defense, I think he needs to turn it over to someone else with a different style of playing the long ball.

I'm not gonna dive deeply into this, nor do I expect to get much support in this opinion, but...

Bama is paying $8+ million/year for the Saban / Smart combo, and with everything they have (which is literally any and everything they could ever ask for) on hand, I'm having a hard time seeing teams roll up HUGE offensive numbers against us, particularly when they aren't running much HUNH (a la this year's Iron Bowl or tonight's game) - in both cases the teams primarily lined up and outplayed us.

I think Saban is a great coach, but he'd better address these defensive issues ASAP - as I'm not the only Bama fan who watches these games, knows the recruiting history, knows all the tools at the coaches disposal - and wonders what's going on...

We gave up 1,167 yards to OSU and the barn.
It's frustrating as hell watching teams throw the ball against man/press when we're not playing the ball well in the air. Sometimes, even with all of the tools they have at their disposal, even Alabama just runs out of talent.

Javier Arenas, Kareem Jackson, Dee Millner, and Dre Kirkpatrick were NFL corners. Doesn't look like we have one at the moment. I expect we'll have others.

Passing has become so much more sophisticated. QB accuracy and route running by WRs. It takes a different caliber player to play DB that we don't have right now.

Definitely the hardest part of this was Bama didn't play well. That rarely happens in the really, really big games. I thought the D played pretty well most of the 2nd half. They were on the field a lot tonite. That one big play they clearly showed was a young LB thrown in the fire, that was the back breaker. Someone said Kiffin is hot and cold and I agree totally. He was cold tonite. Just got away from the run totally. I thought the last drive in the 1st half really really hurt. A run or two there would have been nice. I also agree we swung and missed on a CB or two. Not even so much the coverage as the ball skills. Jones got better, but still few years ago Bama excelled at finding the ball and knocking down or intercepting. Still, a better season than expected on my part. We lose a lot, but good young talent is on campus with more on the way.

I was watching a game a couple of weeks ago, maybe the FCS playoffs and the offense ran the same play 5 or 6 times in a row. The defense could not stop it. The commentator even said if it's working keep on doing it.

Honestly, this team over achieved to get to this point in my opinion. Thank you team for a good run this year.
I agree. First year starter at qb not a bad year. I am disappointed that we didn't continue to feed it to Henry after we were up 21-6

This loss hurts. We could have played better, but hats off to OSU. Hopefully in the off season our defensive coaches can make the improvements we need especially our pass defense. RTR !!!

Never once threw the ball vertical to Cooper- do not comprehend that at all. I will be blunt- the defensive performance was simply embarrassing at times. A third string QB with one start has that kind of a game? Simply should not EVER happen. Rarely blitzed him at all-why? Out coached on both sides of the ball.

LOL, not really, I've just skirted this for the last couple of seasons...

The reality is no mater how well we use time outs, no matter how good LB depth is, no matter how much we blitz - if the CB's are regularly allowing these long bombs to connect or leaving the middle of the zone completely open then there are fundamental issues.

It is what it is. With the talent we have, with the coaching we pay for, well...

I think that is a big stretch. A guy falling down and allowing a TD or being out jumped by someone 4 inches taller than him doesn't have anything to do with scheme. On the particular play you are referencing we had it covered and the player didn't make the play. You can't put that on the coaches.

Now if you want to discuss why we let the QB pick up so many 3rd downs with runs without making an adjustment, I'm game for that.

we had two presumed advantages tonight -- at quarterback and our expected ability to stuff the run and put the game in the hands of their inexperienced quarterback. Instead he outplayed our guy and their offensive line pushed our line around, with the help of the best-blocking receivers in the country.

yet, we make one or two defensive plays in the first half, we probably win the game. But we weren't good enough. No other excuses need apply.
