That's true for the AP poll, but the UPI (coaches) poll didn't start crowing the champion post-bowl until 1974.
Thank you - did not know that. It makes Alabama's claim to that title totally legit. But my point is still valid in that the game was not just an exhibition. Both Alabama and ND knew that a championship would be awarded based on the outcome of the game.

So... Notre Dame gets rewarded for not losing bowl games after they've been awarded championships (because they refused to play) and we get punished for accepting a challenge. Got it. And ND gets rewarded for playing for a tie in '66 while we are undefeated and untied. Makes perfect sense.

That's why the win over them in the 2013 BCSNCG is my favorite. They couldn't cower out of a bowl game like they always did in the past. ND got exposed for the true frauds they really were. It still amazes me that people actually thought they were as good as Alabama in 2012.

Does anybody know why 1941 was chosen?

It seems like we should count the Rose Bowl wins as national championships, and swap out 1941 and replace it with 1945. But, what do I know? not much.

I think we are getting back to a period where the Notre Dame, USC type traditional powers are on par with us. I believe it's good for college football

I'll just say that 1941 was a unique year in American history and suggest you google "the case for 1941". Whether you agree or not, a compelling case is made. No one should argue for 1945, IMHO. I personally feel that the University has chosen the proper years to claim.

That is a very interesting read, and I did not know hardly any of that. I wish I could link it, but I think that would violate the rules here.
