Overstreet claims first-team honors while Burrows earns second-team accolades

Feb. 12, 2015

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
Alabama baseball claimed two spots on the 2015 Preseason All-SEC Baseball Team, the conference announced Thursday morning. Junior Kyle Overstreet earned first-team honors at second base, while sophomore Thomas Burrows garnered second-team recognition as a relief pitcher.

Overstreet enters 2015 after a successful first two years at the Capstone. The second baseman started 60 games up the middle a season ago and has started 123 of his 124 career games for the Tide. He finished last year batting .278 (62-223) with six doubles, one triple and four home runs, while adding 30 RBI and scoring 35 runs.

A standout with the leather, Overstreet committed just four errors across 334 chances at second for a .988 fielding percentage last season. He finished seventh in the conference with 45 double plays turned and has been a part of 112 of Alabama’s 138 in the past two seasons. As a freshman, Overstreet claimed SEC All-Freshman team honors while also earning a Rawlings Gold Glove award. An excellent student, he has also earned SEC Academic Honor Roll nods in each of his first two seasons.

Burrows begins his second season with Alabama after excelling as a freshman. The closer finished his first season on campus with a 4-2 record and 11 saves across a team-high 24 relief appearances. He owned a 2.15 ERA (9 ER/37.2 IP), including 34 strikeouts and a .174 average against. For his efforts, Burrows was named a Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA Freshman All-American, while also claiming SEC All-Freshman Team honors.

For the first time, two 12-person Preseason All-SEC Teams were selected by the conference head coaches, and ties were not broken. Eleven of the 14 SEC schools were represented on the All-SEC teams.

The preseason poll also allowed coaches to select a predicted order of finish for each division and the conference overall. Alabama was selected to finish second in the Western Division and fifth overall. The predicted conference winner entering the 2015 season is the top-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores.

Points for selecting division winners were compiled on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

Alabama will start its 2015 season this Friday, Feb. 13, as the team welcomes the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a weekend series inside Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. First pitch of Friday’s contest will be at 6:35 p.m. CT, with Saturday and Sunday scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.
