The senior tied a career high for strikeouts with seven while allowing only two hits

HOOVER, Ala. – Senior left-hander Taylor Guilbeau tossed six innings and struck out a career-high tying seven batters to help Alabama baseball blank Maryland Eastern Shore, 6-0, in the season opener on Friday evening inside Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
The Southpaw made his second career opening day start and limited the Hawks to just two hits. Joining the shutout effort was junior R ay Castillo, who struck out five to earn the three-inning save.
“I was really pleased with (Taylor) Guilbeau’s outing,” said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. “He came out, was really sharp and found the strike zone. I was also pleased with Ray Castillo and how he threw the ball. Overall with opening night, I’m pretty pleased with the outcome.”
Alabama kicked off the night’s scoring in the top of the third. Leading off the inning, J.C. Wilhite grounded to the third baseman, but an errant throw allowed Wilhite to advance to second. In the next at-bat, an out in right field foul ground allowed Wilhite to take third, and then two batters later Georgie Salem provided the Tide its first run with a chopped single up the middle.
The Crimson Tide continued the scoring in the fifth, rallying for two runs on three hits. A bunt single by Georgie Salem, followed by a double by Casey Hughston placed runners on second and third with two outs. With Kyle Overstreet in the box, a passed ball allowed both runners to move up and then a double to right center by Overstreet brought in the second run of the inning to move Alabama’s lead to 3-0.
Mikey White led off the seventh with a triple to the gap and then crossed the plate when Hughston collected his second double of the night in the very next at-bat. The Crimson Tide added two more in the eighth when a single and two walks left the bases loaded for Hughston. The sophomore dropped in single to left to score one. Following a pitching change, Salem crossed the plate thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly from Overstreet to end the Tide’s scoring for the night.
Salem, White and Hughston all collected multiple hits, while Overstreet and Hughston added two RBI apiece. Every starter reached base safely at least once on the night, as the Crimson Tide produced 11 total hits and earned seven walks.
Alabama and UMES return to action tomorrow afternoon, with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch inside the Hoover Met. The second game of the series will be available to watch on SECN+.
