Play stupid games...
spare the rod....
etc.

no sympathy for these guys from me. Everyone knows Singapore is very strict, plus it's a criminal act practically everywhere anyway.

yeah, i personally think the whole caning thing is barbaric, but its pretty widely known that singapore is a very strict place and uses that as punishment. i don't have a lot of sympathy for folks who can't behave themselves, especially in foreign countries.

Eh, cane, belt, suicides, rolls...the problem is these kids have probably never been held responsible for any of their actions previously.

Singapore is also a beautiful, safe, clean country that stands out among its neighbors, but I agree that they go too far

It's not like they're in Saudi Arabia getting 100 lashes. It's three canes. They knew the rules, they intentionally broke them and they have to pay the consequences. I have no issue with it.

i would like to go one day, i've heard its really nice. i guess ill leave my spray paint at home though ;)
shocked that you haven't been, aren't you regularly all over Asia?

It is an interesting place, i've been many times, like someone took a big west coast US city like LA or Seattle compressed it down to fit the smaller landmass and then cleaned it close to the point of sterile. It is nice though it gets oppressive after a while and it's almost too clean to feel like a real city and just when you think its completely sterile some really sweet looking old Chinese grandmother will offer a "nice young girl for you" or a copy watch

mostly hong kong when i go to asia. we are doing sporadic business into the south pacific islands, but their regs are horrible and constantly changing. i spend more time in the middle east. singapore sounds a lot like dubai. my cousin spends a lot of time there with his work and he says he loves it

yeah, I've been to Dubai. It's a hot, wet, less repressive Dubai covered in stunningly beautiful women and amazing food.

Mrs. Catfish used to go to Singapore once or twice a year she said it's cleaner and better maintained than any place she's ever been. She said it makes Disney World look like a landfill.

Who has the cheapest hookers?
probably singapore. the last time i stayed in dubai (this past nov.) i was in a thai owned hotel and the place (at least the lobby bar) was crawling with russian hookers. apparently certain hotels allow them and others don't.

very expensive. It's been decades since I've been to either (spent a lot of time in sing in the 90's) but Sing shares the weird obsession that much of the world thinks the US has with brands and things. The average American could not care less about Vera Bradley or Louis Vouiton (sp?) but the Average Singaporean knows all of this stuff well and there is one of these stores seemingly every 12 feet, like Dubai. Because Sing is so geographically restricted the land is super expensive, but they also are a socialist dictatorship so there are tons of heavy taxes, alcohol, Tobacco, cars all carry a 100% tax and cars are further restricted in numbers. They have a fixed number on the roads, want to buy a new one? Have to junk and old one (in this case Junk means send to Malaysia or Indonesia as even 10 Year old cars are kep in impeccable condition.

except for food, Singapore's food is cheap and amazing. There is nothing to do in Singapore but eat and it is a national obsession over there along with cleanliness. Everything is good, from a small Hawker stall to a Michelin Star meal. Even the McDonalds is the best McD's you've ever had. I miss the food more than anything

dubai is stupid expensive, even the food. very much a bling and brand based culture. the malls are crazy big, but they have really good air conditioning.

I guarantee you the train stations in Singapore have way less graffiti than the ones in Germany. It can really be an eyesore there, which surprised me given Germans' reputation for being neat and orderly.

My daughter lived part-time in Dubai for several years, commuting from Germany. She really liked it. She's back stateside working for the feds now, but she's going to Kuwait next week. She seems excited...
