The San Francisco 49ers' defense has had an offseason full of attrition. Inside linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland retired. Cornerbacks Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox left as free agents.
Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy is accustomed to fielding a lot of questions about how often running back Eddie Lacy carries the ball. Lacy's production would seem to call for the Packers to give the former Alabama star more chances. Last season, Lacy placed seventh in the NFL with 1,139 rushing yards even though his average of 15.4 carries per game ranked 13th.
"I love Derrick Henry," Saban said. "He's one of the hardest workers on our team. If you were going to give a most valuable player in the offseason program for just finishing, running hard, winning every race, finishing the drill, he'd have probably got it or been in the top three at least. I think that he has a real burning desire to be a really, really good player and works really hard at it."
